[edit] School History

The school gets its name from the town of Sheldon on Grant Line Road. Sheldon was an active center of the Cosumnes River gold activity in the 1850s, and was known as the place where wagons were made. Jared Dixon Sheldon, for whom the town was named, was the most amazing adventurer, entrepreneur, pioneer, and farmer of the south Sacramento-Elk Grove-Sloughhouse-Cosumnes River area. In 1846 he obtained the title to 86,000 acres (348 kmĀ²) known as the Omochumnes Land Grant, all the land that stretched from Grant Line Road to the Cosumnes River. In 1850, Daylor was shot by gold miners who had overrun his property. They objected to the dam he had built to irrigate his crops because it flooded their claims. Thus was ended the brief life on one of the area's most colorful early day settlers. The present Sloughhouse Inn is still operated by descendants of Jared Dixon Sheldon.
