Sheffield Doc/Fest

The Sheffield Doc/Fest aka Sheffield International Documentary Festival (SIDF) is an annual film event held in Sheffield, England. The festival is one of the UK's most prominent events in the documentary film arena. ^[1] Sheffield Doc/Fest consists of three key areas: Screening, Pitching and Masterclasses.

First held in 1994, Doc/Fest has grown to become the United Kingdom's leading event for the factual film and television industry. Each year it offers a forum for producers, distributors, commissioners, filmmakers and emerging talent. The festival aims to provide opportunities to build the creative and business relationships that drive the factual genre.

Sponsors of the festival include the European Economic Community, Sheffield City Council, the UK Film Council, Arts Council England, the BBC, Channel 4, Sky One, Granada Television, and UKTV, among others. Annual events include the Channel 4 Sheffield Pitch - an opportunity for eight shortlisted documentary directors to bid for a £30,000 commission to make a 30-minute documentary.

Patrons include Joan Bakewell CBE, Melvyn Bragg, David Blunkett MP, Lorraine Heggessey and Michael Palin.

In November 2007 "The 14th Sheffield Documentary Film Festival [was held]and screened more than 70 documentaries over seven days. The exotic spectrum of offerings spanned the world from Japan to Africa by way of Hull, and embraced subjects as serious as Slobodan Milosevic's war crimes and as flippant as a journey around the M25"^[2] The 15th Doc/Fest will be held in 2008 and runs from 5th November to 9th November. The deadline for film submissions is 16th June.

Each year Doc/Fest invites new and emerging filmmakers to attend special sessions where they can get advice, learn new skills and work with doc professionals. DocDay Afternoon is for new filmmakers with very little experience but a great interest in the medium and perhaps some previous education or training. DFG Newcomers Day is for those who are already studying documentary or who are just starting in the industry. 5 November is "DocDay Afternoon". 6 November is DFG Newcomers Day.

The festival was launched as a two-pronged event - an international film festival and a conference for all professionals working in documentary film and television production. The first year consisted of all the observational American trailblazers, including Robert Drew, Richard Leacock, DA Pennebaker. The festival is programmed by the Director and Programmer in close collaboration with the Board and Advisory Committee, who generously devote their time and knowledge to creating a rich and challenging programme each year. It has long been regarded as an event owned by members of the documentary industry, who are well-represented on both the Board and the Committee.

[edit] MeetMarket/ Videotheque

MeetMarket is a new pitching initiative at Sheffield DocFest, designed to match documentary makers’ most innovate project ideas with UK and international buyers. MeetMarket is based on an original initiative of the Australian Film Commission (AFC) and the Australian International Documentary Conference (AIDC).

The MeetMarket is a scheme that has been set up to bring filmmakers together with experienced buyers both in the UK and internationally. MeetMarket will run from the 7 November to 8 November in 2008.

"The Docfest offers the ideal forum for documentary makers to meet buyers and to further their projects. This year we are focusing on maximizing opportunities for people to network and do business deals. We already have very good established pitching competitions, and The MeetMarket will add to the many formal and informal settings we provide for people to pitch their projects. We have a record number of international buyers attending Sheffield this year - so The MeetMarket will be a great way to meet buyers from all over the world." ^[3]

The videotheque consists of individual monitors which enable you to watch a film privately. It is open for the duration of Doc/Fest (Thursday 8 November until Sunday 11 November) at the Delegate Centre in the Workstation, from 9am to 7pm. Registered delegates may book time to view a film during these hours. You will be asked to hand in your delegate badge before you view, in exchange for a headset. The badge will be returned when headset is handed back at the desk.

Films can be booked on a daily basis and screening time can be booked in advance for that day. Owing to limited space, delegates may not book for more than two hours per day. Please note that if you are late your slot may be reallocated. Multiple headsets are available for some monitors, allowing two or more people to view the same film together. Please specify the number of headsets required when you book.

[edit] Submit A Session Idea

Doc/Fest has always been a festival owned by the documentary community and industry with dozens of people offering their time and knowledge to put the sessions together. For the second year, people are invited to submit their own session idea using the Doc/Fest online system. The ideas will be discussed and selected by the Doc/Fest team and advisory committee.

Sheffield Doc/Fest operates out of a close central hub of venues. The Showroom Cinema, Sheffield is used as a key venue for screenings. The HUBS is situated opposite The Showroom and houses the MeetMarket plus many other industry sessions and in 2008 - the Skillset Networking Lounge. Together HUBS and The Showroom house the festival. The venues are directly across the road from the Sheffield train station. All public areas of the Showroom are fully wheelchair accessible.

[edit] The Grierson:Sheffields/ Grierson Awards

Doc/Fest runs a series of awards in conjuntion with the Grierson Awards and The Grierson Trust. The Grierson Trust commemorates the pioneering Scottish documentary maker John Grierson (1898 – 1972), famous for Drifters and Night Mail and the man widely regarded as the father of the documentary. At Sheffield Doc/Fest there are three awards presented by the Grierson Trust, the Green Award, which recognises a documentary exploring environmental issues or that has made a contribution to the climate change debate. The Innovation Award, a documentary that exhibits innovation in format, style, technique or content and The Youth Jury Award. The Youth Jury is a panel of 16 to 21 year olds that are selected by Channel 4 and 4Talent.^[4]

Each year Doc/Fest offers the chance for up and coming filmakers to pitch there ideas and projects to profesionals. Last year Channel 4 and Sky both help pitching workshops. Doc/Fest also has involvement from Inspiral Ltd who help new talents with the processes and requirements of a succesful pitch.

[edit] Carbon Free

Sheffield Documentary Film Festival prides itself in being a "Carbon Free" festival. Doc/Fest is the world's first C02 free documentary festival. All the greenhouse gas emissions from the event will be offset thanks to Carbon Planet. Carbon Planet are a company that enable buisnesses and individual manage there contribution to climate change. With the help of Carbon Planet Sheffield Doc/Fest ofsets its C02 emmisions and reduce its carbon footprint. ^[5] In 2006 "Carbon Planet assesed Doc/Fest's emissions- everything from delegate travel to film screenings- and recommended strategies to reduce future emmissions. CEO of Carbon Planet Dave Sag said "We audited Doc/Fest's emissions and found that by holding this event 84 tonnes of greenhouse gases are emitted into the enviroment. By working with Doc/Fest's team, we have reduced this figure from next year and offset the rest"^[6]
