Strange edit

This is a very strange edit that seems to be adding vandalism to an article while claiming (in the edit summary) that you are removing a spam link that "disables page saves". I assume this is something wrong with your ShadowTool? I've reverted it. Gwernol 19:53, 29 November 2006 (UTC)

I would like to try out your Shadowtool. I'm on a Mac, but I believe Darwin hadles Perl pretty well, and X11 can do the graphics. So, can I test it out for you on Mac? -Royalguard11(Talk·Desk·Review Me!) 00:24, 1 December 2006 (UTC)

Ok, I have added myself to the beta testers. They did recently come out with Firefox 2.0 for Mac, so that should work pretty well. -Royalguard11(Talk·Desk·Review Me!) 02:55, 1 December 2006 (UTC)

Hi there, would you be able to help me with this technical issue I am trying to overcome with a Perl wikibot please? Many Thanks- PocklingtonDan 19:47, 5 December 2006 (UTC)

Proposal for a new "how to write/setup a bot" page

I think there is confusion on how to go about starting a bot eghere and here) and there is no wikipage covering this, the main bot page talks only about policy, not avenues for getting started, how to make a bot etc. I have made a suggestion that a howto page be established and, as a frequent editor helping out with bots, I would appreciate your comments. Many Thanks - PocklingtonDan 07:46, 9 December 2006 (UTC)

Hey, Dan, I recently opened up a project on Google Code for perlwikipedia, and I wanted to know if you'd like to help develop it, seeing as you've got quite an impressive bot written in Perl. All you need is a Google account and SVN experience. Thanks! Shadow1 (talk) 22:26, 16 December 2006 (UTC)

Hi, thanks for the offer and the compliments on the bot. I don't think this is for me though thanks, I'm not involved in google at all and i've got enough things to juggle at the moment. Thanks anyway! PocklingtonDan 22:31, 16 December 2006 (UTC)

shadowbot changing spelling

Shadowbot made a revert (which was entirely justified), but in doing so, for some odd reason, it also changed the spelling of the word suggests somewhere else on the page to sugests (the former being correct, the later not). See the revert here. The rest of the revert was justified and correct, it's just this one piece of the edit that doesn't make sense, so I'm reporting it to you. --Bachrach44 15:48, 17 December 2006 (UTC)

Re: Protection

I was just going to drop you a note on this; see the note I left for Eagle 101. The selected anniversaries page is definitely off the Main Page; the day already changed 17 minutes ago in UTC, and the new SA is already on (and the previous one off). Perhaps you didn't clear the cache of your computer? Purging should fix the problem for that. I"m not sure why your bot still says it is on, as well; perhaps you can add a purge command for the bot so that it reads the latest page? Thanks! Flcelloguy (A note?) 00:19, 27 December 2006 (UTC)

Yeah, I'm not sure what was up with that, I'll have to have it purge the page when it runs from now on. I didn't think that the date had switched over because my computer's clock still says it's the 26th; it's not on UTC. Thanks for the note, though! Shadow1 (talk) 00:25, 27 December 2006 (UTC)
I figured the bot was still reading an unpurged version of the page. :-) Barring any objections, I'll go ahead and unprotect the page in a minute, as the page is definitely off the Main Page. Let me know when you've added the purge command/function in; until then, would you mind leaving a note on the bot's check page so that people know about the issue? Thanks again! Flcelloguy (A note?) 00:28, 27 December 2006 (UTC)
I've unprotected now. Thanks for fixing everything! (I assume that the purge function is added now?) Flcelloguy (A note?) 00:32, 27 December 2006 (UTC)

Shadowbot

Hello, Shadow1, there's a few comments for you at User talk:Shadowbot2. If you could respond there, that would be great. Thanks! Flcelloguy (A note?) 04:34, 28 December 2006 (UTC)

I've protected the page now; thanks a lot! Just to clarify, the bot will only email people listed on that page? Do you also wish for me to delete User:Shadowbot2/Report? Thanks again! Flcelloguy (A note?) 17:07, 28 December 2006 (UTC)
Great! I've deleted the page now. Would you mind if I started alerting a few regulars to the page? Flcelloguy (A note?) 17:11, 28 December 2006 (UTC)
Yeah, that probably is overkill. I've just alerted two people (BanyanTree and PFHLai) off the top of my head. Thanks again! Flcelloguy (A note?) 17:24, 28 December 2006 (UTC)

Shadowbot2

I have an idea... instead of using the email function, why not just write to User:Shadowbot2/Report and then immediately delete it. That would in essence automatically white-list all the admins on wikipedia. Ummm now that I think of it, that wouldn't solve the issue of getting the list to trusted non-admins. ---J.S (T/C) 00:29, 29 December 2006 (UTC)

Apparently the purge issue is back; the bot just sent an email alert regarding Wikipedia:Selected anniversaries/December 29, which I had unprotected earlier because it is already off the Main Page. I've reprotected the page for now to stop the bot triggering another alert; I also notice that the automatically-generated list of pages transcluded for the Main Page also appears to not have changed even with the change in date. Perhaps this is the root of the problem, if the bot is reading off of that? Let me know you've recitfied the problem and when I can unprotect that page and not trigger the bot. At least we know it works! :-) Thanks again! Flcelloguy (A note?) 05:07, 30 December 2006 (UTC)
Thanks for fixing it and letting me know! I've unprotected the page now. Thanks again! Flcelloguy (A note?) 16:21, 30 December 2006 (UTC)

Your edits to Romana88

Thank you for contributing to Wikipedia, Bearly541! However, your edit here was reverted by an automated bot that attempts to remove spam from Wikipedia. If you were trying to insert a good link, please accept my creator's apologies, and try to reinsert the link again. If your link was genuine spam, please note that inserting spam into Wikipedia is against policy. For more information about me, see my FAQ page. Thanks! Shadowbot 23:27, 3 January 2007 (UTC)

Shadowbot2 malfunctioning?

Hi, Shadowbot2 just sent me an email urgently informing me that ALL the templates on the Main Page were unprotected. This would certainly be cause for concern, except they aren't.

The full list I got was:

[[User:Jmax-bot/FACount.js]]
[[Wikipedia:Selected anniversaries/January 5]]
[[Wikipedia:Today's featured article/January 5, 2007]]
[[Template:*mp]]
[[Template:Click]]
[[Template:Did you know]]
[[Template:In the news]]
[[Template:MainPageInterwikis]]
[[Template:Main Page banner]]
[[Template:POTD protected]]
[[Template:POTD protected/2007-01-05]]
[[Template:SelAnnivFooter]]
[[Template:TFAfooter]]
[[Template:WikipediaOther]]
[[Template:WikipediaSister]]
[[Template:Wikipedialang]]
[[Wikipedia:Selected anniversaries/January 6]]
[[Wikipedia:Today's featured article/January 6, 2007]]

Gurch 08:03, 5 January 2007 (UTC)

Hey Gurch, sorry for the email. I'm not entirely sure why the bot would have malfunctioned like this; did it send one email, or is it still sending alerts? I'm not on its server at the moment, I'll check it as soon as I can. Shadow1 (talk) 13:30, 5 January 2007 (UTC)
I only recieved one email, at 04:00, 5 January 2007 (UTC); I'm assuming everyone on the list recieved one, though I haven't confirmed it with anyone else. The Picture of the Day templates were completely reorganized recently (which in fact led to more Main Page vandalism because someone forgot to protect something, an image I think); this may possibly have confused it – Gurch 13:45, 5 January 2007 (UTC)
I received the above email at around the same time. Thanks! Flcelloguy (A note?) 01:34, 6 January 2007 (UTC)
It just sent me another one. Again it's saying all pages are unprotected when they aren't – the contents are the same (except that the dated templates are one day further on). This time it was sent at 18:00, 6 January, 2007 (UTC) – Gurch 20:05, 6 January 2007 (UTC)

Compromised accounts

FYI, anyone someone logs into Wikipedia using the "remember me" function, the browsers stores enough information in cleartext to compromise the account. I daresay that many of the 1000+ admins are likely to have less secure accounts than I do. Dragons flight 20:07, 7 January 2007 (UTC)

Your bot's revert of my edits to Domain name

Hi. Thanks for running an anti-spam bot. My contribution history is full of my edits by hand eliminating spam and I appreciate automated systems.

That said, I think that my edit here was was appropriate and useful and your bot reverted it. Can you please explain what is the matter with this example and how I should make it acceptable?

Thanks again. Wrs1864 02:05, 8 January 2007 (UTC)

Shadowbot unaware of RFC2606

I just reverted a recent edit by Shadowbot in the .htaccess article. It is standard practice to use example.com when giving an example of a domain name (as per RFC2606). A link to this domain (or any of the other domains mentioned in RFC2606) should never be treated as linkspam. -- Sakurambo 桜ん坊 10:24, 9 January 2007 (UTC)

I wholeheartedly agree. RFC 2606 specifically states the following as section 3:
3. Reserved Example Second Level Domain Names

   The Internet Assigned Numbers Authority (IANA) also currently has the
   following second level domain names reserved which can be used as
   examples.

        example.com
        example.net
        example.org
-- Jeff G. 11:52, 9 January 2007 (UTC)
As mentioned above, I got bit by this bot's refusal to allow example.com to be used, so I think something needs to be changed here. That said, if you look through the changes that the bot makes, it is clear that example.com is commonly used to vandalize articles. :-< Wrs1864 13:37, 9 January 2007 (UTC)
Shadowbot actually has a built-in safety check that will stop it from reverting if it detects that it has edited that article within the last two edits. This basically means that if you revert Shadowbot's reversion, it will leave you alone. Shadow1 (talk) 19:47, 9 January 2007 (UTC)

Shadowbot2

Hi, the bot just sent out another email. This time, it complained that one page and three images were unprotected. However, all of these things were on yesterday's Main Page, 9 January 2007, and had already been taken off the Main Page and unprotected when Shadowbot sent out the email, 00:22, 10 January 2007 (UTC).

This is an automated report of unprotected templates and images I detected during my scan of the Main Page. This list also includes tomorrow's templates, but not tomorrow's images.

 Unprotected templates/images I found were:

[[Wikipedia:Selected anniversaries/January 9]] -- http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Wikipedia:Selected anniversaries/January 9
[[Image:Waves of paratroops land in Holland.jpg]] -- http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Image:Waves of paratroops land in Holland.jpg
[[Image:Louis Daguerre.jpg]] -- http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Image:Louis Daguerre.jpg
[[Image:Treasury of Athens at Delphi.jpg]] -- http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Image:Treasury of Athens at Delphi.jpg

These templates/images should be protected immediately.

Fixing this would be appreciated, as I have now had five "urgent" messages from Shadowbot2 none of which identified a genuine problem. One other minor thing, if you're including the full URLs, can you convert spaces to underscores first? That way the links are clickable in email clients that support it, which is most of them. Thanks – Gurch 00:39, 10 January 2007 (UTC)

How I check for protection

This perl sub will return the current protection status from the protection log(by reading the top most entry in the protection log). This is more likely to stay stable than looking through the html tags which have historically changed from time to time. Feel free to use it. HighInBC (Need help? Ask me) 01:03, 10 January 2007 (UTC)

sub check_protection
  {
  my $page = shift;
  use LWP::Useragent;
  my $ua = LWP::UserAgent->new();
  my $data = $ua->get("http://en.wikipedia.org/w/index.php?title=Special:Log&type=protect&page=$page")->content();
  $data =~ m/\[edit=(sysop|autoconfirmed):move=(sysop|autoconfirmed)\]/;
  my $edit = ($1 || undef);
  my $move = ($2 || undef);

  }

Assuming that this section refers to Shadowbot2, how often does Shadowbot2 run and how up to date is the Wikipedia Main Page Protection Log? (I suspect the latter is "to the microsecond, as it's generated dynamically") -- Jeff G. 02:06, 10 January 2007 (UTC)
