Shabda, the text that you included was copyrighted, per the original text [1]. Copying and pasting text from another site is unacceptable unless the license is explicitly stated and permits you to do this (in this case, it was copyrighted and in fact the license was explicitly reserved by the author). {{helpme}} How can I include a section to be displayed from some other page? I am trying to edit Portal:Python programming, how can I include an article like Python programming to be displayed on that portal page?

Hello, I am thw1309. I created and maintain Portal:Cahtolicism. To use such a section, you copy the parts of the article, which you need, and put them in your article archive. You should use such article archives, which change automatically every month. This gives you the possibility, to create the content whenever you want and the content is not lost after the month. --Thw1309 19:55, 22 July 2007 (UTC)

There is one good advice, I can give you. Look for a portal you like. For excample Portal:European union is great. There I have stolen the idea of the three pages. From Portal: Christianity I have taken the structure of the page. It is much easier to use the content of an existing portal, to copy it in your sandbox and to change it until it is perfect for you. About the archives. In difference to a usual article, a portal changes much of it´s content. You do not want to spend every first day of the month to create a new content. Therefore you create archives. There, you can write whenever you want and the content will be changed every month. Another advantage: the content of the last month will not be lost. The "quote" is not designated as such (you could use quotation marks at the least as I just did, better is a quote box). Furthermore, the quote is not attributed, nor is it sourced. I did not tag it due to improper naming. I tagged it for notability. How are quotes from or about a programming language notable or encyclopedic in nature? Go look at ANY other encyclopedia in the world, and let me know if that is an entry. Also, it is impossible to reference something that is not notable. OK, I think I resolved this by turning it into a soft redirect to the wikiquotes page. Perhaps there is a book by van Rossum with that quote? We could include that if you can find it. To put something in a quote box, simply use the formatting: <blockquote>blah, blah, blah...</blockquote> I think the quote is notable and OK in the context of a portal, since van Rossum is identified in the portal as the "benevolent dictator" of Python. We don't really have guidelines for quotations, so it's hard to say when a quote is notable. Sometimes, a quot is enough for an entire featured article.--Chaser - T 22:24, 22 July 2007 (UTC)

This is a subpage designed to be included in a portal. The most commonly used templates for portals includes a box for quotes. I have looked at a number of featured portals and saw a subpage with quotes. Try Portal:Hinduism for an example. So your assertion

is not valid. That page is not meant to be an encyclopedic standalone page, but something which would be included into another page. As about notability, a quote from the inventor of a programming language might not be notable in itself, but can surely be included on a portal page about that programming language. I happen to agree with you, Shabda, that it's notable, but the lack of a source is problematic. I'd say, if you really want to include a quote section, restore it with a {{fact}} tag, and then try to find a source for that or some other quotation. The portal isn't dead without the quote (lots of portals don't have such a section), though I certainly understand if you feel strongly about including it.--Chaser - T 03:20, 23 July 2007 (UTC)

No, for the same reason Wikipedia doesn't reference itself. Both projects are user-editable, so whatever is on Wikiquotes may have been added by any joe, dick, or tom on the internet, just like Wikipedia. That's not to say that you can't borrow references from a Wikiquote page to reference something on Wikipedia, or some Wikipedia article to reference the same or a different assertion on another Wikipedia article.--Chaser - T 03:31, 23 July 2007 (UTC)

Sure. The notability guideline for websites is Wikipedia:Notability (web), better known by its shortcut, WP:WEB (most pages that being with Wikipedia: have a shortcut). The primary criteria is the same for all notability guidelines: non-trivial coverage in secondary sources. Awards and the content provider can also establish notability, as you can see in the guideline. As to soft redirects, one can create them with {{softredirect}}, so {{softredirect|wikiquote:Python}}, for example (with the project name, then a colon, then the name of the page on its sister project).--Chaser - T 03:16, 23 July 2007 (UTC)
How can I see the contributions of a specific user?
The easiest way is to go to their userpage and then to the toolbox in the left margin. Click on "User contributions", third from the top. There is an article which I would like to create, however that page is a redirect to another page which has some informations about it. What is the criterion on deciding if the article merits an independent entry, or should it be a part of another article. I want to create Google Web Toolkit which redirects to Google code
The main considerations are whether enough sources exist to create an article that meets our verifiability policy and WP:WEB. In this case, google itself is helpful, as the relevant google news archives have plenty of sources. Frankly, it's pretty common that articles get created without sources, so don't worry too much. If you move or copy any material, note it in the edit summary, ideally with a wikilink back to the article you got it from (links work in edit summaries, too). There are some other considerations with redirects, but none appear to apply here, so you're good to go! Leave a note for me if you want a once over when you're finished. Thanks, I created that article. What is the policy on moving an existing page. I would like to move page spamdexing to Black hat seo, with a redirect from [[spamdexing]. Black hat seo is a better name for the techniques. I asked if any one has objections on the talk page, but nobody has responded. Good job. :) The relevant policy is Wikipedia:Naming conventions and very basically says articles should have the most common name in English (with 1,000 exceptions). Given this has already gotten talk page discussion, I'd say moving or merging it is fine. There's not a hard and fast rule about how long to wait, although 5 days is plenty of time for people to notice your comment on their watchlists--use your best judgment. Be bold! Hey, just so you know: When you're trying to add an indented comment to something placed as part of a numbered list (as you did in response to User:Husond's comments on Wikipedia:Requests for adminship/Crassic), the preferred method to do it is this:

# Comment 3

which will produce:

  1. Comment 1
  2. Comment 2
    Comment to comment 2
  3. Comment 3

Notice how that does not disrupt the numbering.

Contrast this with what you did, which is:

which produces:

See how the numbering is disrupted there?

You asked, on Wikipedia:Requests for adminship/Crassic, "is WP:SNOW official wikipedia policy? Or is it an essay?" (I figured I should be the one to answer your question, saying as I invoked it in closing that RfA)

There has been a lot of back-and-forth about the exact nature of that page, but here's my take on it: SNOW is a declaration that both defines existing behavior and is a behavioral guideline for future edits (though it is by no means official). It's kind of a logical extension of WP:IAR, but that policy is also fraught with a myriad of interpretations and misinterpretations.

So, WP:SNOW doesn't really like being defined, but yet it gets invoked often anyway. It is, if anything, somewhat of a paradox. :) EVula // talk // // 19:30, 12 August 2007 (UTC)
