Shawn Lam was born in 1977 at the St. Boniface Hospital in Winnipeg and attended Collėge Jeanne-Sauvé from 1989-1995. He received his BA from the University of Winnipeg in 1999, specializing in Business Administration. In 1995, he opened his first business, a franchise of College Pro Painters, which he operated for 4 years while attending university. He was a Star Manager in all four years and received the Outlet of the Year award in 1999. He published his first academic paper in 1998 at the Administrative Sciences Association of Canada and presented his paper at their annual conference in St. John, NB.

Shawn moved to Vancouver, BC after graduating from university and to accept a position with College Pro Painters as a General Manager. He left that position in 2000 and opened a video production company in 2001 with his younger brother Greg, which they operated until August 2003. Shawn started his third business, Shawn Lam Video, in September 2003.

In 2004, Shawn was elected to his first term as President of the British Columbia Professional Videographer's Association. He also served as President in 2006 and 2007. In 2005 he received the Merited Professional Videographer's accreditation from WEVA International at their annual Expo in Las Vegas, NV. He has twice taught video production seminars at the WEVA Expo. His topics were Business Strategy for Videographers and Dance Recital Strategy. In 2007 he attended and taught a seminar at the 4EVERGroup Video'07 convention in Jacksonville, Fl.

In April 2007 Shawn became a columnist and contributing editor for EventDV Magazine, a magazine for event video professionals. His column name is Stage to Screen and his monthly columns are published both in print and online.

Shawn is marrying his fiancé, Amanda Kuipers, on July 6th, 2007 at Whannock Lake in Maple Ridge, BC.
