Do you feel left out because you haven't earned a barnstar yet (or enough of them)? Well, you've come to the right place. Here you can earn them, and Wikipedia's other awards. It won't be easy, but it will be fulfilling, and you will be helping Wikipedia immensely.

This is intended to be a fun way to select tasks and direct effort. Please feel free to join in as an awarder and/or an awardee.

Here's how this works:

To earn barnstars, place your name under the assignment you would like to take on, so we know to watch your progress. And then complete it! (You can also drop any awarder a note on their talk page to let 'em know when you've completed an assignment).

To award barnstars, create and add new assignments below, and/or sign it and any other assignments you intend to watch. Then monitor those who are trying to complete existing assignments. When someone completes one, award him or her with a barnstar!. (It also helps if you set an example through participation in the assignment activities).

Note: If the original sponsor of a challenge has left Wikipedia or is on extended Wikibreak, contact The Transhumanist or Sharkface217 regarding the barnstar award.

[edit] Basic Topics Lists - list building drive!

Below is a list of basic topics lists that need development.

One of Wikipedia's table of contents subsystems is the set of Lists of basic topics. It is intended to outline human knowledge presented on Wikipedia. The lists in the set use a "cheat sheet" format to make it easy to see the structure of each subject area at a glance.

General knowledge buffs needed! If you'd like to be a polymath, this is a good place to start. You'll be exposed to many different subject areas! The cheat sheet format makes it fairly easy to compile a list on almost any subject. Most of the material on many subject areas is already included in Wikipedia somewhere, so for those it's mostly a matter of exploring Wikipedia and collecting links.

Here are some specifics to help you get started...

Basic topics lists are built using the template {{BLT}} (the "basic list template", easily remembered as a "bacon, lettuce, tomato" sandwich). The template is used like this: {{subst:BLT|topic|Topic}}, where "topic" is the topic starting in small case (if a proper noun, capitalize this), and "Topic" is the subject capitalized. Here's an example: {{subst:BLT|paleontology|Paleontology}}.

Those in red still need the BLT. The rest already have it. BLT is a rudimentary skeleton providing subtopics for a basic topics list. The structure is not set in concrete - that is, it is not absolutely required - and once in place it should be altered to fit the topic of the list. If at all possible, replace the "basic concepts" subheading with a further breakdown of the topic. The subheadings should be rearranged and/or renamed to best suit the topic.

Each basic topics list has a lead section (opening definition). What I generally do is copy the lead from the corresponding article and edit it down to be more concise.

Once you have completed a list, move it to article namespace, and contact me.

If you'd like to collaborate with others, add all the basic topics lists to your watchlist, to see where the activity is. And keep in mind that the more you edit these lists, the more likely someone who has them watchlisted will join you. Let's turn this into a beehive of activity!

The goal of the set of basic topic lists, is to provide a fundamental table of contents of Wikipedia which also serves as a basic outline of human knowledge.

I've built dozens of these lists, but there is no way I can complete this system by myself. A team of editors at Britannica took 8 years to build the Propaedia, but Wikipedia has a much larger team of editors. :) Any help you can provide will be most appreciated.

How to production-line the development of the above lists: using Linky (in Firefox), select (highlight) the whole list above, right click, and in the dropdown menu move your pointer down to "Linky". In the drop down submenu click on "Open Selected Links in Tabs". In each tab, work on a specific section, save, then close the tab using Ctrl-W (which moves you instantly to the next tab and the next page in the list). Work on the same section in that list, save, close tab - repeat until all the tabs are gone. Working on the same section in each list will present shortcuts and section-specific skills which will speed up the process as you go.

These use the template BLT country. If a country has been missed and you need to use BLT country, substitute the template like this: {{subst:BLT country|Country name}}.

Once you complete a country's basic topic list enough that it would be useful to the users of Wikipedia, please move it to article namespace, and add a link to it on Portal:Contents/Lists of basic topics/Geography and places. I'd be happy to do it, but I suck at (1) and (3) and after much reading I still can't figure out how to do (2), so I guess I'll have to leave that part of it for someone else. One of the most important goals of Wikipedia is to present verifiable information. Therefor, this challenge is to find and add inline references (using the <ref> and </ref> delimiters) to various articles. Look through Category:All articles lacking sources, and add at references to them. Be sure that the sources you choose meet our verifiability policy, and remember that sites like IMDB, Youtube, Myspace, and blogs are unreliable and can't be used as sources. See Wikipedia:Citing sources for instructions on how to add references to articles. A great tool to use for adding references is on Jehochman's user page: you right click on a page, click Wikipedia Cite, and the code to copy and paste appears. The download is here. Another tip: Pressing Special:Random often turns up small articles in dire need of sourcing, but the unreferenced category you're sure will need articles :) Remember, it's about quality, not quantity, and only quality references will be rewarded.

Lately, many article have been nominated for Good Article reviews despite not meeting the criteria. The most notable concern with many of these is that they are not thoroughly sourced. I don't mean to pick on any nominations, but a couple of random examples nominated right now are Ohio and Mario. My challenge is for editors to choose any two of these undersourced articles (ones that have a very noticeable lack of citations, not ones that are missing two or three citations) and get them thoroughly sourced (all content sourced, and a minimum of one reference per paragraph—using only reliable sources). Feel free to do some proofreading and looking for other GA review concerns while you're at it. Once you are finished, notify me on my talk page and let me know which articles you have worked on. Except in exceptional circumstances, album and single covers should only be somewhere between 200 and 300 pixels in size. All too often, people upload images that are far, far too large- I will give a barnstar to anyone who finds 25 album covers that are too big, and uploads a smaller version of them. This does not include covers that you have uploaded the first version of. Also, you can take this challenge multiple times. Sign up below, and present your evidence (link to a user subpage, link to your upload log, whatever) next to your name (as well as notifying me on my talk page) once you've completed the challenge. If you're having trouble finding any, have a surf through Category:[Your favourite genre of music] albums, Category:Album covers or even Special:NewImages.
