The Amazing Race: MK is the first installment of the popular reality television show, The Amazing Race to be held in The Mushroom Kingdom. The Amazing Race: MK features eleven teams of two, with a pre-existing relationship, in a race around the Mushroom Kingdom. Applications were accepted through January 20, 2005 (one week later than the original deadline). Semi-finalist interviews occurred in late February/early March, followed by finalist interviews in Toad Town during late March and early April. Filming began in May 2005.[2] In the premiere episode, host Phil Keoghan expressed confusion at the land around him, but pressed on.

The two hour season finale was aired in May. An astounding number of people tunes in to watch it.

Note 2: Wario & Waluigi, having lost their ticket to Glitzville, were forced to perform the optional roadblock.
Note 3: While attempting to get to the pit stop, DK & Diddy caused large amounts of damage. To pay for it, they started the leg with no money. Their placement was not affected.

  • Red means the team was eliminated.
  • An underlined Blue team placement means the team was the last to arrive at a pit stop in a non-elimination leg of the race. This means that the team was not eliminated. The team was forced to give up all their money and all of their possessions, except the clothes on their backs. They also received no money at the start of the next leg. There is not, however, a penalty allotted to teams who arrive last on the last leg of the race.
  • A Green ƒ means the team won the Fast Forward clue. A leg number with an ƒ means there was an unused fast forward on that leg.
  • A yellow > means that team chose to use the Yield; < indicates the team who received it; <> indicates a leg where the Yield was available but not used.

[edit] In-Race

  • In Leg 1, Grodus & Lord Crump accidentally went to Shooting Star Summit and Flower Fields.
  • King Boo & Boo, Goombella & Prof. Frankly and Wario & Waluigi all checked in at the same time in Leg 1, gaining them all 8th place. However, Phil told them they 'were teams 8, 9 & 10'.
  • In Leg 2, teams were given a blimp ticket from Don Pianta for completing the roadblock. During Leg 3, teams had to use this ticket to ride the blimp to Glitzville. If teams lost this ticket, they would have to do an optional roadblock. This is the first time such a thing has been done.
  • In Leg 4, having fallen so far behind, Wario & Waluigi received a clue at the airstrip that told them to go directly to the pit stop.
  • During Leg 5, The Detour had to be delayed until morning, due to opening hours and safety reasons. However, teams were released in the same order that they got the clue with the appropriate time gaps. This is the first time this has been done in the history of The Amazing Race
  • At the end of Leg 7, Teams were given check in times for the Pit Stop. This is an interesting twist that makes its first appearance on The Amazing Race MK
  • Leg 8 began at MKA, though the Pit Stop of Leg 7 was on Yoshi’s Tropical Island. Due to an impending storm, the first task of the leg had to be skipped for all players, so they began the leg in the former location.
  • During Leg 9, Boo was playing the popular game Space Invaders at the Sky Land Airport.
  • According to the closed captioning, the professional SkyDiver who jumped with Luigi spells his name Toews, despite pronouncing it Taves

  • The Mushroom Plains were referred to in the show as "World 1-1". It is actually nicknamed this, even on Earth.
  • Some of the music used during Leg 11 is the same as the music used in Super Mario Bros.
  • This is the third time someone who had been Yielded has finished ahead of the team that Yielded them. In Leg 12 Mario & Luigi were Yielded by Bowser & Bowser Jr., but checked in ahead of them.

[edit] Post-Race

  • The First episode (Toad Town → Shiver City) was originally broadcast as a 1-hour episode. After the sixth episode was aired (Pianta Village → Mount Corona) Episode 1 was re-aired with more material added to it to make it a 2-hour episode. [edit] Race locations

Air travel destination    Detour    Roadblock    Fast Forward    Yield    Pit Stop

[edit] Leg 1 (Toad Town → Shiver City)

The first Detour was Shovel or Sled. In Sled, teams had to Toboggan down a winding path towards Starborn Valley, while trying not to crash. In Shovel, teams had to Shovel a driveway, but then walk to Starborn Valley.

[edit] Leg 2 (Shiver City → Rogueport)

  • Shiver Beach
  • Rogueport , Don Pianta's office >Roadblock ("Who's Ready for a Strong Favor?")<
  • Rogueport, Trouble Center >Detour (Crook Nabbing or Fish Snaring)<
  • Rogueport, Cheep Cheep Blimps >Pit Stop (Leg 2)<

The Roadblock was to do a favour for Don Pianta, piling 20 boxes. The Detour for this leg was Crook Nabbing or Fish Snaring. In Crook Nabbing, teams had to chase a bandit through the streets until they caught him. He would give them their next clue. In Fish Snaring, teams had to go fishing on a run down boat until they caught one of 10 fish with an amazing race logo on them.

Additional Task

  • At Shiver Beach, teams had to stomp Koopas, who held times for their departure to Rogueport

[edit] Leg 3 (Rogueport → Glitzville)

  • Rogueport, Cheep Cheep Blimps >Roadblock (Optional Roadblock: "Who's ready to play the games?")<
  • Glitzville , Glitz Pit >Detour (Heat of the Fight or Heat of the Dog)<
  • Glitzville, Glitz Pit
  • Glitzville, airspace >Roadblock ("For someone without Acrophobia")<
  • Glitzville, Champion's Room >Pit Stop (Leg 3)<

If teams lost their blimp tickets, they would perform the optional roadblock. The optional roadblock was to play all 4 Paper Power Minigames at Don Pianta's Casino. In the Detour, teams that chose Heat of the Fight had to fight a random opponent from the Glitz Pit roster. In Heat of the Dog, teams had to sell 15 hot dogs to the spectators in the Glitz Pit. In this leg's regular Roadblock, one team member had to don a wing cap and fly through hundreds of helium balloons looking for one with their next clue.

Additional Task

  • After the Detour, teams had to search the seats of the Glitz Pit for their next clue.

[edit] Leg 4 (Glitzville → Delfino Plaza)

In the first of only two Fast Forwards, teams had to search the hundreds of screens in the Mushroom Kingdom Airport to find one typo. The typo was Boshi's Island instead of Yoshi's Island. In the Detour, teams that chose Shine Gate had to use FLUDDs to clean off the large shine gate (or one of the bell towers if shine gate was occupied). In House of Crates, teams had to use hammers to break 15 crates. In this leg's Roadblock, one team member had to Search the entire Delfino Plaza for 10 blue coins, so they could pay for their boat to the pit stop.

Additional Task

  • Teams had to swim to Shipwreck Island to get their next clue.

[edit] Leg 5 (Delfino Plaza → Pianta Village)

In the Detour, teams had to choose between Carry Over or Explore Under. In Carry Over, teams had to transport spring water to fill the hot tub, as many buckets of water were required. There were also different sizes of buckets. In Explore Under, teams had to traverse the treacherous mushrooms underneath the village while wearing a harness. They would have to climb back up themselves if they fell. This leg contained the first of only 3 yields, where Peach & Daisy yielded Bowser & Bowser Jr. In the roadblock, teams shot arrows at balloons, which symbolized the Fluff Festival.

[edit] Leg 6 (Pianta Village → Mount Corona)

In this Leg's Detour, teams had to choose between Stones and Subs. Teams that chose Stones had to split up. One team member would use a mechanical ascender to climb the volcano's walls and chip away the rocks. Their partner would catch the falling rocks. In Subs, both teams members had to get in a lava-proof submarine and search the expansive lava pools for their next clue. The Roadblock required one team member to wrestle a powerful Pianta out of the ring and into the lava.

Additional Task

  • Teams used pre-supplied Flare Mushrooms to swim through the Lava River, invincible to it.

[edit] Leg 7 (Mount Corona → Yoshi’s Tropical Island)

  • Delfino Plaza, Docks
  • Yoshi’s Tropical Island , Melon Island Beach
  • Yoshi’s Tropical Island, Palm Island Beach >Detour (Comb it Over or Carry it Over)<
  • Yoshi’s Tropical Island, Palm Island >Roadblock ("Who's ready to party?")<
  • Yoshi’s Tropical Island, Whirl Island >Pit Stop (Leg 7)<

The Detour on this leg of the race featured two common activities from this locale. In Comb it Over, teams pulled large, dead tree branches across the beach, in an activity known as beach combing, which prevents erosion. In Carry it Over, teams had to transport 500lbs of fruit. In the Roadblock, 4 of the chosen team members had to play in a Mario Party. The higher the placement of a team, the faster they could check in.

[edit] Leg 8 (Yoshi’s Tropical Island → Sky Land)

The Detour on this leg of the race was Jump Up or Smack Down. Teams choosing Jump Up had to find a Kuribo’s Shoe for each team member, then ride it over a tricky obstacle course. Teams choosing Smack Down had to traverse through the Sky Land Fortress and defeat Boom Boom. The Second Yield of the race appeared on this leg, but no-one used it. The Roadblock had one person searching the Cloud area of Sky Land, looking for a Tanooki Suit, with which they could use to anchor an airship.

[edit] Leg 9 (Sky Land → Grass Land)

The Detour on this leg of the race was Spelunking or SkyDiving. Spelunking sent teams to search in a dark, piranha plant infested cavern to search for a clue. SkyDiving involved both team members skydiving from 10 000 feet in the air with a professional skydiver. The Roadblock had one person using binoculars to search Grass Land for a single pipe with an amazing race flag on it. This pipe contained the pit stop.

[edit] Leg 10 (Grass Land → Bob-Omb Battlefield)

This leg's Detour required teams to pick between two culturally relevant tasks, namely Charge or Chain. In Charge, teams used a confusing map to perform an obstacle course, collecting parts of the clue along the way. In Chain, teams had to subdue a Chain Chomp and retrieve the clue it was guarding. The Roadblock was to find 8 colored coins hidden among the Battlefield, similar to how Mario searched for 8 Red Coins once here.

[edit] Leg 11 (Bob-Omb Battlefield → Mushroom Plains)

The Detour on this leg of the race was 100 or 25. Teams that chose 100 had to accumulate 100 coins from the coins littered around the Mushroom Plains. Teams that chose 25 had to make their way through the entire level in 25 seconds or less. If they failed, they had to try again. The second Fast Forward appeared on this leg. In it, teams had to find a single, solitary invisible block that contained their next clue. The Roadblock was to defeat all the enemies that were populating the Mushroom Plains.

[edit] Leg 12 (Mushroom Plains → Dry Dry Outpost)

The Roadblock was to learn the art of Telekinesis and levitate 5 objects. The last Yield of the race appeared on this leg. Bowser & Bowser Jr. Yielded Mario & Luigi. This leg's Detour required teams to pick between two tasks in the expansive desert. In Search, teams rode ATVs around the entire desert, looking for their next clue. In Rescue, teams dug in a marked dig site for their next clue.

[edit] Leg 13 (Dry Dry Outpost → Toad Town)

Leg 13 (Dry Dry Outpost → Toad Town)

The Roadblock required teams to create a rhyming song that detailed the events of the race and perform it at Club 64. This leg's Detour required teams to pick between two final tasks. In Dojo, teams had to fight The Master, one team member at a time. In Mojo, teams had to play Chess against Merlon and win.

Additional Tasks

  • At the Lil’ Oinks pen, teams tested their Agility by catching one of the very fast pigs.
  • At the Playground, teams tested their Luck by playing a game that tested their knowledge of the other team member.
  • At the Sewers, teams tested their Navigation by exploring the sewers once again.
  • The final task before the finish line was to arrange pictures of items seen in the race in chronological order while using clues to decide which pictures were fake.
