I see in early versions of this article, it was alleged that the arabic word and the english word were some way connected. That is no longer the case so is there any purpose for the statement regarding "sheriff" in this article? Pepsidrinka 06:00, 19 December 2005 (UTC)
- To keep dimwits from inserting the "information" again. I restored the statement, as I really don't want to have to keep removing false etymologies. There are some criticisms or ideas that must be answered, even if they're totally dumb. Zora 08:46, 21 December 2005 (UTC)

I would prefer to have two articles. The titles have had different meanings and have been used differently in some times and places. The similarities can S710 07:26, 3 October 2006 (UTC)
- Support merger of this article with Sayyid. The articles have overlapping meanings and the differences seem to be like that between Count and Earl: mostly language-based rather than meaning-based. Just as one is an earl or count, but not both, one is a Sharif or Sayyid, but not both. Lethiere 20:27, 4 December 2006 (UTC)
