Kazaa

Does it support Kazaa? -- smkatz 05:31, 18 November 2003 (UTC)

No. Iroll 05:26, 10 Mar 2004 (UTC)
Kazaa aint an Open system, that is, it won't let other software connect to it. Hence it's going down the pan! User:PopUpPirate 00:34, 29 January 2005 (UTC)

Merge with Michael Stokes

Should this article be merged with Michael Stokes? The Stokes article doesn't add much information and repeats the bit about the MP code. -Joshuapaquin 03:36, Mar 18, 2005 (UTC)

Well, Stokes designed it, but as it develops with open source, it will have less of Stokes imprint on it, would prefer separate articles --PopUpPirate 09:23, Mar 18, 2005 (UTC)
Agreed - Zephyrxero 23:23, 20 Mar 2005 (UTC)
Maybe would be better to add more info about Mike... hey is doing more things... like Mercora —Preceding unsigned comment added by 200.92.152.194 (talk • contribs) 23:54, 26 January 2006

I miss Shareaza

Sigh. I miss this program. I wish there was a mac-version of it. Oh well. 69.235.11.105 02:04, 4 Apr 2005 (UTC)

See also links

Question- should we really have "See also" links to competing programs (when there's a broadening field of competitors)? I think it should just be to the protocols; those wanting more information can go through those. It's not fair to directly compare, say, Azureus and Limewire... they are very different. -Joshuapaquin 01:56, Apr 12, 2005 (UTC)

Malware

Is there any malware with this program? yes or no, it might be nice to mention it in the article. --Mikrostuff 05:32, 28 Apr 2005 (UTC)

Shareaza doesn't have any malware/spyware. Shareaza is my preferred P2P software. --*drew 07:42, 28 Apr 2005 (UTC)
shareaza is the best —Preceding unsigned comment added by 200.92.152.194 (talk • contribs) 23:54, 26 January 2006

Features list

Today I removed a features list from the article and am putting it here. It's not appropriate to put this right into the article; if an important feature is left out of the text than it should be worked in using the existing paragraph form. Plus I suspect it's been copied verbatim from somewhere. -Joshuapaquin 20:35, Jun 10, 2005 (UTC)

Shareaza Features: The power of 4 P2P Networks simultaneously Download from multiple sources Sophisticated file-hashing Find a file with Global Searching Multiple results tabs Previews, users comments, and ratings Customisation Preview files and Chat to others Preview filters Block malicious companies and clients. Compatible with Windows 95, 98, Me, NT, 2000 and XP. Shareaza has been tested on all modern versions of the Windows operating system.

External links

Wouldn't it be wise to drop a few of the external links? If we just link to shareaza.com , people will find all the other stuff (wiki, forum, IRC channels, ...) there, right? --Jonne 22:27, 29 September 2005 (UTC)

Agreed - done --PopUpPirate 22:39, 29 September 2005 (UTC)

Closed-source criticism?

Is the closed-source criticism really still relevant? 2.0.0.0 was released under GPL on 2004-05-31, over a year and a half ago. Nobody has thought of Shareaza as a closed-source client in a long time. --Acehole 19:12, 10 January 2006 (UTC)

No, it really isn't. I'll remove it now... -FrYGuY 06:44, 11 January 2006 (UTC)

Maintainer field

I think that the 'Maintainer' data should be changed, since Mike is not doing almost anything, and there's a Shareaza Development Team. —Preceding unsigned comment added by 2006 200.66.16.66 (talk • contribs) 23:54, 26 January

Gnutella links and Piolet links

O.K.... Shareaza CAN handle "gnutella:" links but it can not create them anymore. And Shareaza can handle Piolet ("mp2p://") links because their are similair to "ed2k://" links but Shareaza is NOT able to download files from the Piolet protocol and it is not able to connect to such clients... Anis 09:50, 10 March 2006 (UTC)

Uh... The first part is correct, it disallows the creation of gnutella: links because they're depricated in favor of magnet, and this is a pretty easy way to discourage their creation. The second part isn't actually correct... Piolet links are NOT similar to ed2k links, because they have a different structure and use different hashes. Piolet uses MD5, and ED2k uses a custom compound MD4 hash. You're correct that it doesn't connect to the Piolet protocol, but the statement that it handles Piolet link is entirely accurate, and is completely seperate from the ability to connect to that network. So in the end, I'm left wondering exactly what your point is... -FrYGuY 19:46, 8 March 2006 (UTC)

Other features

Should the "security filter", the plug-in ability, the image viewer, the sksscanner, the "profiles" and the other features be included in the feature list? Anis 09:50, 10 March 2006 (UTC)

It depends on whether those features are found in most p2p clients or if it's a unique Shareaza feature. It doesn't have to be 100% unique, but should at most be limited to 2-3 clients. Also, please sign your name with 4 tildes (~~~~) -- Y Ynhockey (Talk) Y 17:43, 9 March 2006 (UTC)

"Shareaza Plus"

Has Shareaza Plus been mentioned? [1] [2] [3] - Image:Ottawa flag.png nathanrdotcom (TCW) 21:51, 10 March 2006 (UTC)

Not that I know of, but it probably doesn't deserve more than a by the way sort of mention - the Shareaza Plus Sourceforge page has an incoherent description and doesn't even say that Shareaza Plus is derived from Shareaza (not obviously to people who aren't familiar with the program). Likewise, it does not state the main differences between Shareaza and Shareaza Plus. -- Y Ynhockey (Talk) Y 22:13, 10 March 2006 (UTC)
I installed it last night and even I don't know the difference. - Image:Ottawa flag.png nathanrdotcom (TCW) 22:45, 10 March 2006 (UTC)
The difference is that somebody forked the Shareaza source, changed some of the defaults (And set some to values which are intentionally impossible to set in Shareaza) to values which return great results for the user, but completely abuses the network(s), and then let the code 'rot', as last time I checked it hadn't been updated since, meaning it doesn't have the many bug fixes which have been put into Shareaza since then... in my opinion, it's not worth mentioning... -FrYGuY 07:52, 12 March 2006 (UTC)
Well, I don't know about that. Shareaza Plus is at version 2.3.0.0 (updated 6 March), while Shareaza is at 2.2.1.0 (Oct 2005). - Image:Ottawa flag.png nathanrdotcom (TCW) 03:20, 13 March 2006 (UTC)
Um... You realize that Shareaza Plus was last updated March 6th in 2005, not 2006, right? And that the real Shareaza's latest CVS addition at the time of this writing was 7 hours ago? Also, the version is meaningless... they just wanted a higher number to sound like it was that much newer and better. -FrYGuY 20:45, 19 March 2006 (UTC)
OK OK, I understand. Sorry for not reading further. — Image:Ottawa flag.png nathanrdotcom (TCW) 06:17, 20 March 2006 (UTC)

The screenshot doesn't contain the huge Shareaza header! Shouldn't this be updated? —Preceding unsigned comment added by 82.101.190.163 (talk • contribs) 13:16, 30 March 2006

is shareaza public?

How do they when they are not public??? Cause i thought shareaza was not public, or is it? Please tell me if it is or isn't. Call of duty 05:17, 21 June 2006 (UTC)

I don't really understand your question, but if by 'public' you mean open source, then yes, Shareaza is open source since version 2.0. -- Ynhockey (Talk) 09:35, 21 June 2006 (UTC)
Oh i thought it wasn't Call of duty 18:33, 21 June 2006 (UTC)
Note: i changed the title because i was gonna delete the first part but if i do now people wont know what he means by he doesnt understand my question. Call of duty 03:24, 22 June 2006 (UTC)

viruses????

Does shareaza have viruses? (Note:I didnt read the page exactly about shareaza)lol. Call of duty 03:20, 22 June 2006 (UTC)

No, it does not. Please read the page. -- Ynhockey (Talk) 03:31, 22 June 2006 (UTC)
dude, even though i didn't read the page yet it has to have viruses. Limewire, kazaa, morpheus and alot more have viruses. Plus shareaza and all of them aren't like rhapsody or something they're not illegal.-Call of duty 23:51, 11 July 2006 (UTC)
Shareaza the software doesn't have viruses. If you use Shareaza to download dubious files, you might download some viruses, but that's your responsibility to avoid them. — Omegatron 02:01, 12 July 2006 (UTC)
oh i get it. Call of duty 21:37, 12 July 2006 (UTC)
would i get viruses if i just go into shareaza.com? Call of duty 20:11, 30 July 2006 (UTC)
Not unless you live in a parallel universe where you can get viruses just by visiting websites... — Omegatron 13:22, 1 August 2006 (UTC)

Fake files

I wanted to add something about fake files that plague the program, as discussed here, but I'm not sure if they are Shareaza-specific or network-specific. — Omegatron 07:09, 8 July 2006 (UTC)

Pretty sure it's network-related. All Gnutella clients suffer from fake files. -- Ynhockey (Talk) 10:33, 9 July 2006 (UTC)
Both gnutella 1 and 2? — Omegatron 14:29, 9 July 2006 (UTC)
While I personally haven't encountered any fake files on Gnutella 2, they likely exist. This can still not be Shareaza's fault because Shareaza does not control the G2 network, it just happens to be the main client that connects to it. If you want to mention fake files on G2, I guess Gnutella 2 would be the article to do it in. -- Ynhockey (Talk) 14:57, 9 July 2006 (UTC)

what if

if i did use shareaza and got caught what would happen? even though i dont. Linux rocks 01:56, 30 July 2006 (UTC)

Uh, Shareaza is legal, as are all peer to peer clients. What is illegal is using it do distribute (and in most countries also download) copyrighted material. -- Ynhockey (Talk) 10:58, 1 August 2006 (UTC)

Illegal

is shareaza illegal —Preceding unsigned comment added by 24.208.118.19 (talk • contribs) 16:15 9 August 2006 (UTC)

Please read the above comment. Please read comments on this page before asking your question as your question may already be answered. — Nathan (talk) / 04:15, 10 August 2006 (UTC)
It's illegal cause limewire, kazaa, etc. is. And all free music downloads are illegal. Even say "is shareaza illegal?" in google or something. Call of duty 23:25, 15 September 2006 (UTC)
Call of Duty, I don't mean to sound like a bastard, but you're questions (and answers!) are based on a poor understanding of how this stuff works. It seems to be accidental disinformation due to youth or inexperience, but please stop. "it's illegal cause limewire, kazaa, etc. is." The legal issues facing P2P programs are really all about users downloading COPYRIGHTED material. Which doesn't make the P2P Programs themselves illegal, just the user's actions. I hope this helps, and I hope you finally read the article. Afterwards, check out the P2P wiki article, and look for legal actions. Also the article Comparison Of P2P Software is quite helpful.-rocket —Preceding unsigned comment added by 24.0.78.251 (talk • contribs) 01:35, 7 October 2006

Critisism

Removed folowing, you cat critisize every windows program with this:

Some also criticize the developers for continuing to use Microsoft specific, proprietary tools in its development, now that it is an open source project.[citation needed] The current codebase heavily relies on both Microsoft Visual Studio and a Windows only toolkit. Many Linux and Mac users have asked for a version that can run on other operating systems,[citation needed] but so far no one has stepped forward to work on a port to a more cross-platform design, although Shareaza can run using Wine.
