An Introduction to Shanxi University Shanxi University, situated in Taiyuan (capital of Shanxi Province), has a century-long history and profound cultural accumulation. Shanxi University, was founded on May 8 th , 1902, as Shanxi Grand School, alongside the Metropolitan Grand School (the predecessor of Peking University) and the Northern Grand School (the Predecessor of Tianjing University), inaugurating a new era for modern Chinese higher education. In May 2005, Shanxi University was co-established by the state Ministry of Education and the People's government of Shanxi province. Over her one hundred years, Shanxi University has evolved a cultural tradition of “knowing the East and the West; seeking the good and true; promoting the virtuous and the talented; being self-reliant and serving the country”, and a school spirit of “ being industrious, strict, honest and creative”.
Shanxi University is currently the sole comprehensive university in Shanxi Province with all academic fields covering philosophy, economics, law, education, literature, history, science, engineering, medicine and management. Its education programs extend to 66 specialities for undergraduates and 18 specialities for the double bachelor's degree. At present, it has 137 general Masters of Arts / Masters of Sciences (M. A. / M. S.) programs, 6 specialized M. A. / M. S. programs, 48 doctorate programs and 4 centres for post-doctoral studies. Among these many programs, philosophy of Science and Technology and Quantum Optics are designated as state key programs and 20 others are designated as provincial key- or key- constructing programs. Shanxi University also hosts one key ministerial research centre for humanities and social sciences (i.e.: Centre for Philosophy of Science and Technology), three provincial research bases for humanities and social sciences, one state key laboratory of quantum optics and optical quantum devices, one key ministerial laboratory of chemical biology and molecular engineering, and one key laboratory to circulate intelligence and process Chinese information, which was co-established by the provincial and ministerial Education Department and three key provincial laboratories. Moreover, the Laboratory of Quantum Optics and Optical Quantum Devices won the title of Outstanding Research Innovation Group designated by the Ministry of Education and other two Outstanding Research Innovative Groups designated by Shanxi Province. In addition, the university sponsors a base for National Foundational Scientific Research and Teaching-oriented Talents Cultivation approved by the Ministry, a national education base of Cultural Qualities of College Students, a national educational base for Chinese Language Teaching and a national base for Teacher Training.
Shanxi University has a highly-qualified teaching staff, many of whom are highly distinguished in their own academic fields. At present, Shanxi University has 1,945 full-time teachers, including one academic from the Chinese Academy of Sciences, three external academics from the Chinese Academy of Sciences, 882 lecturers with advanced academic titles, 106 supervisors for doctoral students and 527 for masters, four state-level middle-aged experts with the title of prominent contributions, and 69 experts with a special state-sponsored allowance. Among these lecturers are
· one winner of the Heliangheli Fund ;
· one professor with the title of Changjiang Scholar;
· one winner of the National Outstanding Youth Fund;
· three winners of University Young Teachers Award sponsored by the Ministry of Education;
· eight lecturers with the honour of “Backbone Teachers” designated by the Ministry of Education;
· one winner of Inter-century Talents Cultivation Plan;
· two winners of the New Century Excellent Talents Supporting Plan;
· two National Model Lecturers;
· two winners of the Huo Yingdong Award conferred to eminent lecturers.
The university also invited 330 scholars well-known at home and abroad, such as Mr. Yang Zhen-ning, as guest, part-time or honorary professors. Moreover, six of the 10 young and middle-aged lecturers with innovative talents and 13 of the 54 young academic leaders designated by Shanxi Province are from Shanxi University.
Shanxi University provides well-equipped teaching facilities and elegant studying environments. The campus, covering a geographic area of 2,450 mu and a floor space of 1,030,000 square meters, is awarded the titles of “ Gardenlike Unit” and “ Green University” by the provincial government. The south campus now appears more modern appearance and complements the traditional north part of campus, each enhancing the other's beauty. With a collection of 2.95 million copies of books and 172 thousand electronic books in its libraries, Shanxi University houses teaching and researching instruments with a total value of more than 200 million yuan RMB. The university also pioneered on campus Internet service subscription among the universities throughout the province.
Shanxi University puts emphasis on the overall quality of talent, and always views “teaching complex knowledge, cultivating profound talents and meeting the country's demands” as its task. The university has cultivated a variety of talents for the country and society in its 120,000 students and is proud of its outstanding alumni such as Sun Jianchu, the founder of Chinese petroleum geology; geologist Wang Yuelun, an academic of the Chinese Academy of Sciences; Wang Shou, the founder of Chinese Biological Statistics and Crop Breeding; Xiao Yishan, an academic, the chairman of Taiwan Central Research Academy and also a historian specializing in Qing dynasty; Shi Jinmo, one of four famous doctors in China; Chuan Dao, a close friend of Lu Xun, a famous essayist, and other eminent students. Since reform and opening up, another group of students graduated from Shanxi University have become influential, such as Zhu Rixiang from the Department of Physics, an academic of the China Academy of Sciences now; Wu Weihua from the Department of Biology, a Changjiang Scholar in Chinese Agriculture University; and Yao Pengfei from the Department of Mathematics, the winner of National Eminent Youth Fund, amongst others. The university has gradually implemented the student-oriented educational system, thus guaranteeing the overall quality of students and their comprehensive development, and winning a good reputation. At present, 15,683 undergraduates and 4,000 graduate students are studying in this university. Around 20% of undergraduate students purses higher degree studies upon graduation. The admission bottom line of entrance examination has always been highest among the universities in Shanxi province. The employment rate is consistently ranked top in Shanix province. Besides strict academic training, the students participated in diversified activities and won titles and championships. In the 9 th “Challenge Cup” of National Undergraduates' Extracurricular Academic Scientific and Technological Works Competition, undergraduates of our university won the special award and first prize for the first time, and their total score ranked 13 th among the universities and colleges participating in this competition. In 2000, Shanxi University participated in the National Undergraduates Sports Meeting on behalf of the universities of Shanxi province, and won the “President Cup” along with another 9 universities. Students from the university won 12 first prizes in national competitions such as mathematical modeling, electronic design, English competition, setting-up exercise, etc. over the past two years. The dissertation of Dr.Yin Jie who specialized in the philosophy of science and technology won the Excellent Award in the National One-hundred Excellent Doctoral Dissertations Competition. In 2003, the university passed the evaluation of undergraduate teaching conducted by the Ministry of Education and won an “ Excellence” score.
Shanxi University has made numerous achievements in academic research. In the past three years, the quality and quantity of papers cited by SCI, EI, CSSCI increased gradually. The university has also successfully acquired 246 national research projects. Eighteen of these are key projects including the national “973” projects, “863” projects, national projects for major scientific and technological breakthroughs, key projects of national natural science foundation, national projects of science foundation for eminent youths, national “torch programs”, and state projects on the industrialization of high-tech research results. Two hundred and thirty-two projects in scientific research won awards at provincial / ministerial or higher levels. Among these projects, “All-solid-state single-mode and single-frequency green laser” won the second prize of National Technological Inventions (2002), the book titled Post-modern Philosophy of Science won the second prize of the Third Humanity and Social Science Research Achievement of Colleges and Universities approved by the Ministry of Education (2002); the projects of “ Research an application of stability of low-degree coloured compounded wine” (2003) and “ Research and application of key techniques of producing potassium sulphate with mirabilite” (2003) won the second prizes of National Scientific and Technological Advancement respectively; the project of “Photosensitive hydrolysed materials” won the second prize of National Technological Inventions (2004), and the project of “Periodic shunzi and high-octane quantum Suichuan ” won the second prize of Natural Science approved by the Ministry of Education (2005).
Shanxi University has expanded its foreign exchanges with other universities across the world. Up to now, it has established inter-collegiate relationship with 50 overseas universities and/or institutions such as Cambridge University (U.K.), Birmingham University (U.K.), Aston University (U.K.), the Sixth University of Paris (France), Aachen University (Germany), California Institution of Technology (U.S.A.), Idaho State University (U.S.A.), Arkansas State University (U.S.A.), Manitoba University (Canada), Tokyo International University (Japan), Yokohama University (Japan), Tokyo Kokushikan University (Japan), Rikkyo University (Japan), Paichai University (Korea) etc., and remain active in international academic communications including joint education programs, faculty and student exchanges. Nowadays, the university has already become a bridge and a window of international technological, educational and cultural exchanges.
Shanxi University ranked 64 th among over 1,000 Chinese universities in terms of comprehensive educational institutions according to the Chinese university rankings in 2006. The university has adopted a century-long tradition and follow the ideals of “founding existence on the basis of quality, pursuing developments in virtue of characteristics, obtaining momentum by the means of reform and making profits by way of opening up”. Shanxi University aims to become the exclusive centre for high-quality talents cultivation, high-level scientific research, sophisticated technological results transformation and first-rate decision-making and consultation. To achieve this aim the university will enhance a harmonious relationship between high level teaching and profit-making, and evolve into both a high-level national research and teaching university and an influential international research and teaching university.
