Talk:Shangri-La County
From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
Is it correct for this article to be called "Xianggelila"? While the Chinese name of this town is 香格里拉, the article itself mentions that the official form in English is Shangri-La, and not Xianggelila, which is just the pinyin transcription of the characters. Using "Xianggelila" in English is like calling Ürümqi "Wulumuqi" or Harbin "Ha'erbin". The Chinese media seem to use "Shangri-La" consistently in English texts. See, for example, this article in the People's Daily, or this other article in the official Xinhua news agency website. In the Spanish Wikipedia, where I contribute regularly, we had a discussion about how to name the article, and we finally settled for "Shangri-La (Yunnan, China)". Maybe that would be a good idea here as well. --AngelRiesgo 14:07, 28 July 2005 (UTC)
