Shayne Carter was born in July, 1964 into a musical family, in Dunedin, New Zealand. He attended school at Kaikorai Valley High School, where he performed as lead singer in the rock group Bored Games. After finishing high school, he worked at Radio 4XO as a journalist for 2 1/2 years, and later also worked for fledgling campus radio station Radio One.
In subsequent years he has performed in the following bands:
The Straitjacket Fits were considered the best of the group of bands to emerge from Dunedin and were signed to Arista records to a potentially lucrative worldwide deal. However, by 1994 the band had broken up. The Fits released 3 albums: Hail, Melt, and Blow. The group built a solid following overseas while receiving little recognition in New Zealand
Straitjacket Fits reformed for a reunion tour during April and May of 2005.
