[edit] Curriculum

Shawsheen Tech has a variety of "shops" (such as culinary, automotive, cosmetology, health, metal fabrication. etc) as well as regular academics. Students as freshman rotate through 14 shops over the school year; one week through the academic portion of the shop, and the week after experience what is done in the shop hands on. Around the month of May, the freshmen choose the shop they want, and during the shop week, they learn more about their trade.

During the academic week, students have regular classes they need that is necessary for the curriculum to go on to the next year. The curriculum in order to graduate is four years of English, at least two years of science (if going on to college three years),three years of math (if going to college four years),and two years of history. A student will have three years of physical education; two years being swimming and/or gym for half a year and health education for the other half. During the day, a student will have eight 45 minute classes and a lunch period. The teacher/student ratio is usually one teacher to 10 students.

At the end of Junior year or throughout Senior year, students who have reached their shops requirements, and maintains a B average in all their major classes throughout the year can choose to go on Co-op. Co-op is when students find a job in their particular trade and works their, while getting paid, during shop weeks instead of going to school. This lets the student experience work in their trade, and gets a feel for working full-time after they graduate, if the don't go to college.
