Shawkat Osman

Shawkat Osman (Bangla: শওকত ওসমান; also Shaukat Osman) full-name Sheikh Azizur Rahman (1917-1998) was a Bangladeshi novelist and short story writer. He was born in Sabalsingha pur 1917 in the district of Hughli, West Bengal.His father's name Sheikh Mohammad Yehia.

Born in what was then West Bengal, Shawkat Osman migrated to Bangladesh (at that time East Pakistan) after the partition of India in 1947. He started his professional life by teaching at Dhaka College in Dhaka. He also tought at Chittagong Commerce College. He was a servent of Mujibnagar Government in 1971. He died in Dhaka in 1998.

Osman's first prominent novel was Janani. Janani (Mother)is a portrait of the disintegration of a family because of the rural and urban divide. In Kritadaser Hasi (Laugh of a Slave), Osman explores the darkness of contemporary politics and reality of dictatorship.
