Shaun Gallagher is an American philosopher. He is the chair of the Philosophy Department at the University of Central Florida, and has an appointment as Research Professor of Philosophy and Cognitive Science at the University of Hertfordshire in England. He co-edits the journal Phenomenology and the Cognitive Sciences. He’s the author of several books, including How the Body Shapes the Mind, Hermeneutics and Education, The Inordinance of Time, and most recently (with Dan Zahavi), The Phenomenological Mind. He did graduate studies at Villanova University and Louvain, and received his Ph.D from Bryn Mawr College. His research deals with phenomenology, philosophy of mind, cognitive science, and hermeneutics.

In How the Body Shapes the Mind Gallagher, drawing from phenomenology and empirical cognitive science, provides a detailed account of embodied cognition, defends the distinction between body image and body schema, and explores a number of philosophical implications concerning themes of perception, social cognition, agency, and free will.
