[edit] History
Many years ago, the river Ravi flowed here and due to river this area was cultivated. The tribes of Gujranwala saw this place and settled here followed by the forefathers of the Aarain tribe from Sahiwal. The founder of Sharaqpur who build first home on this place was the grandfather of Hafiz Muhammad Jamal. In this period Hazrat Hafiz Muhammad Qadri and religious scholars was reached here from Hujra Shah Muqueem and built a mosque.
[edit] Origins of name
Hazrat Syed Abdul-Qadar Sani (Almaroof Kimia-ul-nazar) stayed here. Now it was like a village. With the passage of time, many people arrived here and they spread Islam, even the King of that time arrived here and developed this area. Different opinions are found about name of Sharaqpur. Miyan Mohammad Ashiq (late) writes in his book named “History of Sharaqpur” the name of Sharaqpur was kept by the numbers.
If we count the numbers of Sharaqpur then it will be 808 and this is the year of foundation of Sharaqpur. Other opinion is that Sultan Muhammad Shah Sarqi was used to meet famous personalities of Sharaqpur and give special attention on this area. Therefore people began to call this area Sharqipur after this Sharaqpur became the acronym of Sharqipur. Another opinion is that Malik Sharq the son of Malik Faheem had come to meet religious scholars of Sharaqpur and paid much attention to Sharaqpur. Therefore, after negotiation among people, they called this area Sharaqpur.
[edit] Modern history
In 1557, educational institutions were established here. There were forts of Non-Muslims and Sikh, they were jealous of the progress and prosperity of the Muslims. They want to destroy the central power of the Muslims. So there were battles between Muslims and Non-Muslims.
Muslims were winner. After this, Muslims thought that to save themselves from the attacks of the Non-Muslims, a wall should be build around Sharaqpur. So this wall was constructed and it had five gates. The names of these gates are Malkana gate, Gujrawala gate, Roshnai gate, Pari gate, Lahori gate. On every gate a watchman was appointed and these gates were closed at night. There was also a Shahi Mahal, now it has been destroyed with the passage of time. It was very beautiful palace.
