Shaolin and Wu Tang (Chinese title: Shao Lin yu Wu Dang [simplified 少林与武当, traditional 少林與武當]) is a 1981 Hong Kong martial arts film directed by Lau Kar Leung. The film is about the rivalry between the martial arts schools Shaolin and Wudangquan. It is also called Shaolin Vs. Wu-Tang in the Master Killer Collection.
The film inspired the name of the rap group Wu-Tang Clan, who used several sound samples from the film in their 1993 debut album Enter the Wu-Tang (36 Chambers).
[edit] Synopsis
Two young master students in Shaolin (Gordon Liu) and Wudangquan (Adam Cheng) were best of friends but are brought to fighting by a Manchu Prince (Lung Wei Wang). The Manchu Prince wants to become the master of the Shaolin's Chon King Fist and the Wu-Tang sword style. He also wants the two groups to destroy each other so he can be the only master. After everyone dies except for the two master students, They put aside their differences and team up to fight the Manchu Prince. Soon after, they all die in a dramatic twist as the Manchu Prince pretends to keel over dead, as he receives a sword wound to the chest, but grabs the ankle of the Wu-tang master student and throws him into the nearby acid pool. The Shaolin student soon suffers the same fate, but brings the Manchu Prince down with him.
Despite this cheerless ending, the acid pool turns out to be something that is a "reversal of evils", and burns away all evils. At the actual end of the movie, all three of the young men are shown drinking tea together. The last line in the movie is one of the Wu-tang student thinking to himself. Roughly translated, it is, "Soon, they will all die." This is supposedly directed towards the kingdom that he is expected to lead, since the Manchu Prince has foisted the rule of the kingdom upon him, finding himself to be unworthy to rule, after having his sins burned out of him.
Note: Although in many regions it is claimed that Gordon Liu directed this film, it was actually directed by Lau Kar Leung.
