The Shanghai Stadium (上海体育场) is a multi-use stadium in Shanghai, China. It is currently used mostly for football matches. The stadium was built in 1997 when the 8th National Games of People's Republic of China was held in Shanghai. It can hold about 80,000 people, so it is also called the "80,000 people's Stadium"(八万人体育场). It is probably one of the thirty largest football stadiums[[1]] in the world, and will be the second-largest stadium in China after the completion of the Beijing National Stadium in 2007. It will be used for football preliminaries at the 2008 Summer Olympics.
[edit] Name
Shanghai Stadium is close to Shanghai Indoor Stadium, and these two building only have one word different both in Chinese and in English, and so many people become confused between them, especially after the opening of Shanghai Metro Line 4, which has two adjacent stops with these names.
