Shanghai Metro - Line 8 - Yangpu Line
Line 8 is a subway line from Shiguang Road, in Yangpu District to Yaohua Road, in Pudong. There are also future plans for the line to be extended to Aircraft Park in Minhang District. This subway line was built to alleviate the traffic congestion from Yangpu District to the downtown core of Shanghai.
[edit] Introduction
The subway line's first phase, which opened on December 29th, 2007, runs between Shiguang Road and Yaohua Road, excluding Zhoujiadu station. Trial operation began for the first phase of this line on September 16. Even though this is a subway line, trains used for light rail lines consisting of six cars are being used throughout the line. The trains are manufactured by Shanghai Electric and Alstom.
The line will be extended further south; Chengshan Road Station is planned to open at the end of 2008, and the extension to Aircraft Park in Pujiang Town is planned to open in 2010. Also, Zhoujiadu station is planned to open in 2010.
[edit] Interchanges
- Hongkou Stadium - At this station passengers can connect to Line 3, but they must exit and re-enter the station, as the interchange has not been built yet. The difficulty with this interchange is that Line 3 is located above ground, while Line 8 is entirely underground.
- People's Square - Passengers can interchange to Line 1 and Line 2 at this stop. This is also a very important stop, as it is located at a major financial district as well as near many tourist attractions.
- South Xizang Road - Passengers can interchange to Line 4 at this stop when the final Line 4 extension is in operation.
