Shanghai Metro Line 5, also known as the Xinmin Line, was opened on November 25, 2003 as the fourth line of the Shanghai Metro to open. Along with the other "light railway" line, Line 6, it is run by Shanghai Modern Rail Transit Co. Ltd.

The line connects the southernmost station of Line 1, Xinzhuang with the Minhang Development Zone in Minhang, a satellite city of Shanghai.

A branch line from the north side of Dongchuan Road will go staright at Humin Road, and cross the Huangpu River by Minpu 2nd Bridge to Fengxian District.
