The Shanghai Masters, also known as the World Snooker Roewe Shanghai Masters for sponsorship purposes, is a professional snooker tournament. It is one of a number of ranking tournaments.
The event was introduced in the 2007/08 season and is the second ranking event to be held in China as a result of the growth of the sport in the country. Like the China Open, an extra wildcard round was included before the first round proper, featuring eight promising Chinese players.[1]
The tournament currently takes place at the Shanghai Grand Stage, Shanghai in August and is the first ranking event of the season. Prize money for 2007 totalled £250,000 ($496,411) with the winner receiving £48,000 ($95,311).[2]
