Shanghai International Studies University (上海外国语大学) is one of the most selective universities in the People's Republic of China. It is considered one of the top two universities that specialize in teaching foreign languages in China.

Shanghai International Studies University (SISU), founded in December 1949, is a key university in China and one of the universities of Project 211 ( the Chinese government’s endeavor aimed at strengthening about 100 institutions of higher education and key disciplinary areas as a national priority for the 21st century). Under the direction of the Ministry of Education of the People’s Republic of China, SISU has been jointly nurtured by the Ministry of Education and the Municipality of Shanghai.

The mission of SISU is to cultivate elites with multidisciplinary knowledge, multiple skills and international orientation. SISU enjoys an excellent reputation home and abroad.

Now, SISU has two campuses, one in Hongkou District and a 53.3-hectare one in Songjiang New District.

SISU comprises colleges and departments that offer associate bachelor, bachelor and postgraduate programs, programs for adults, network programs and programs for international students, as well as several research institutes. SISU provides twenty-six bachelor programs (English, Russian, German, French, Spanish, Arabic, Japanese, Persian, Korean, Thai, Portuguese, Greek, Italian, Teaching Chinese as a Foreign Language, International Business & Trade, Finance, Law, International Politics, Educational Technology, Journalism, Radio & Television News, Advertising, Information Management & Information System, Business Administration, Accounting, and Chinese), nineteen master programs (English Language & Literature, Russian Language & Literature, French Language & Literature, German Language & Literature, Japanese Language & Literature, Spanish Language & Literature, Arabic Language & Literature, Foreign Linguistics & Applied Linguistics, Comparative Literature & World Literature, International Relations, International Trade, Business Management, Educational Technology, Journalism, European Language & Literature, Linguistics & Applied Linguistics, Modern & Contemporary Chinese Literature, Diplomacy, and Translation), nine second-class Ph.D. programs (English Language & Literature, Russian Language & Literature, French Language & Literature, German Language & Literature, Japanese Language & Literature, Arabic Language & Literature, Translation, International Relations, and Foreign Linguistics & Applied Linguistics), and one first-class Ph.D. programs (Foreign Languages & Literature). Besides, the university has one postdoctoral center (Foreign Language &Literature), one national research center of humanities & social sciences (Middle East Research Institute), one undergraduate education base of non-universal languages (Italian, Portuguese and Greek), two national key programs (English and Russian), three Shanghai key programs (English, Russia and Arabic).

SISU has a full-time enrolment of over 1100 postgraduate students, 5300 undergraduate students, 1000 college students, and 900 international students.

SISU has a faculty with academic prestige and educational experience. There are more than 300 professors and associate professors as well as a group of brilliant lecturers. They report constant achievements in academic research. Their academic papers, books, textbooks and reference books have won many an award in nationwide appraisal. SISU also publishes several influential academic journals circulating in China and overseas.

SISU attaches great importance to fundamental foreign language teaching. The latest teaching approaches and management expertise are in use. The programs offered are categorized into three types, namely comprehensive programs (language + speciality), bilingual programs (English + another foreign language) and professional programs (English + a profession). Tutorship and credit systems are adopted for undergraduate students. A student is entitled to take a minor program apart from his major.

Advocating international academic exchange and cooperation, SISU has entered into partnership with more than 100 renowned universities in over 30 countries and regions. Quite a few foreign government leaders have visited SISU and many world celebrities are appointed as part-time professors. Every year, SISU sends its outstanding students to study abroad. Students of SISU have been invited to many important academic forums held home and abroad.

A batch of scholarships, loans and financial supports are provided. Chances of part-time jobs are offered to help students fulfill their study. With specialized skills, students are enthusiastic about internships in every field. Meanwhile, students are cultivated and nourished by the kaleidoscope of campus life and university culture of SISU.
