IMDb profile |
Shanghai Grand (traditional Chinese: 新上海灘; Cantonese Yale: San seung hoi taan), also known as Shanghai Grand 1996 to differentiate this film from its more illustrious TVB series of the same name (traditional Chinese: 上海灘) The Bund, is a 1996 Hong Kong film starring Leslie Cheung, Andy Lau and Ning Jing.
This film was directed by Poon Man-Kit and produced by Tsui Hark. It is a loose adaptation of the TVB series in many respects although it was done by narrating the action in 3 segments each featuring the main characters of the film. Leslie Cheung was cast as the hero of the Chinese people Hui Man-Keung while Andy Lau was cast as his close friend Ding Lik, a well-meaning but somewhat naive triad leader who was not amused when Hui fell in love with the same girl as the one of his affections, Fung Jing-jing acted by Ning Jing.
The story was set in about the same time as the era when Shanghai was ruled by triads shortly before the occupation by Japanese troops in World War II.
