Shanghai is a 2008 remake[citation needed] of the 1935 thriller mystery film Shanghai, starring John Cusack and Ken Watanabe.

In the months leading up to the bombing of Pearl Harbor, an American man arrives in Shanghai to find his friend recently murdered. In investigating his friend's death, he stumbles upon a secret the United States government has been keeping.[1]

Shooting began on location in Shanghai, but the shooting permit was revoked shortly thereafter, forcing the producers to search East Asia for another suitable location.[2]
