[edit] Education

Shane Ellison, also known as the People's Chemist, holds a Bachelor of Science degree in biology from Fort Lewis College and a Master of Science degree in organic chemistry from Northern Arizona University.

During his undergraduate studies, Shane was the two-time recipient of the Howard Hughes Medical Institute Research Grant for his work in biochemistry and physiology. While in graduate school, he received awards for his work in peptide mimetics and amino acid synthesis. His thesis, The Asymmetric Synthesis of Diaminosuberic Acid, has been used for the successful synthesis of various peptide mimics, which have novel applications in medicinal chemistry.

[edit] Career

Beginning his career as a pharmaceutical chemist designing Hormone Replacement Therapy (HRT) and anti-cancer medications, Ellison went through experiences that eventually brought him to the conclusion that pharmaceutical companies are not interested in curing diseases, only in using their drugs to mask symptoms and make money.

While working for Array Biopharma designing Tamoxifen derivatives for Eli Lilly, Ellison noticed that Zenica Pharmaceuticals and the FDA allowed the anti-breast-cancer drug to remain on the market even after studies had linked it to increased rates of endometrial cancer.[2] Direct to Consumer (DTC) ads for Tamoxifen stated that it might decrease cancer risk.[3] Given the questions about its side effects and long-term effectiveness, many found such advertising, and the FDA's approval of Tamoxifen's use by healthy women, alarming.[4] Shane was one such person, and the episode compelled him to abandoned his career as a drug chemist and become a consumer natural health advocate.[5]

Ellison's experience with Tamoxifen was a catalyst for writing his first book and turning his critical scientific eye towards other drugs which he felt were a danger to consumers. On October 6, 2006, he gave an interview to Crusador Magazine and discussed Vioxx and some of the problems within the FDA.[6] Of note, was the mention that his book Health Myths Exposed, first edition, was published before Vioxx began making headlines, and referred to Vioxx as the "silent killer.[7]

According to Mr Ellison, the FDA and Merck knew about the dangers associated with Vioxx for at least 4 years before it was taken off the market. "Instead of removing the drug immediately," he said, "they kept it on the drug market for matters of wealth not health."[8][not in citation given]

Shane's work in consumer health advocacy over the years has garnered thousands of emails in which many people referred to him as "my chemist".[citation needed] Using this as a theme, he created the People's Chemist.com website to expand his advocacy platform.[9] Ellison is a contributor to numerous newsletters, including Dr. Hotze’s Newsletter, EzineArticles.com, NaturalHealthWeb.com, Modern Forager, and LowCarb Monthly Magazine. He appeared in Gary Null's award-winning documentary Prescription for Disaster and is a luminary for Life Path Limited DVD series.
