Shamong Township is a Township in Burlington County, New Jersey, United States. As of the United States 2000 Census, the township population was 6,462.
Shamong was incorporated as a township by an Act of the New Jersey Legislature on February 19, 1852, from portions of Medford Township, Southampton Township and Washington Township. Portions of the township were taken to form Woodland Township (March 7, 1866), and Tabernacle Township (March 22, 1901).[3]
New Jersey Monthly magazine ranked Shamong Township as its 6th best place to live in its 2008 rankings of the "Best Places To Live" in New Jersey.[4]

According to the United States Census Bureau, the township has a total area of 45.1 square miles (116.7 km²), of which, 44.8 square miles (116.1 km²) of it is land and 0.2 square miles (0.6 km²) of it (0.55%) is water.
Shamong Township borders Medford Township, Tabernacle Township, Washington Township, Camden County, and Atlantic County.

As of the census[1] of 2000, there were 6,462 people, 2,132 households, and 1,820 families residing in the township. The population density was 144.2 people per square mile (55.7/km²). There were 2,175 housing units at an average density of 48.5/sq mi (18.7/km²). The racial makeup of the township was 97.25% White, 0.82% African American, 0.11% Native American, 0.67% Asian, 0.31% from other races, and 0.85% from two or more races. Hispanic or Latino of any race were 1.05% of the population.
There were 2,132 households out of which 44.9% had children under the age of 18 living with them, 76.2% were married couples living together, 6.0% had a female householder with no husband present, and 14.6% were non-families. 11.4% of all households were made up of individuals and 3.8% had someone living alone who was 65 years of age or older. The average household size was 3.03 and the average family size was 3.29.
In the township the population was spread out with 29.4% under the age of 18, 6.5% from 18 to 24, 28.9% from 25 to 44, 29.2% from 45 to 64, and 6.0% who were 65 years of age or older. The median age was 37 years. For every 100 females there were 100.5 males. For every 100 females age 18 and over, there were 99.8 males.
The median income for a household in the township was $77,457, and the median income for a family was $82,534. Males had a median income of $55,664 versus $35,440 for females. The per capita income for the township was $30,934. About 2.3% of families and 2.6% of the population were below the poverty line, including 3.7% of those under age 18 and 2.1% of those age 65 or over.

Members of the Shamong Township Committee are Mayor Jon Shevelew (2010), Deputy Mayor George Young (2008), Sean Gray (2009), Chris Norman (2010) and Mary Anne Reinhart (2009).[7]
[edit] Federal, state and county representation
Shamong Township is split between the Second and Third Congressional Districts and is part of New Jersey's 8th Legislative District.[8]
New Jersey's Second Congressional District, covering all of Atlantic County, Cape May County, Cumberland County and Salem County and portions of Burlington County, Camden County and Gloucester County, is represented by Frank LoBiondo (R, Ventnor). New Jersey's Third Congressional District, covering portions of Burlington County, Camden County and Ocean County, is represented by Jim Saxton (R, Mount Holly). New Jersey is represented in the Senate by Frank Lautenberg (D, Cliffside Park) and Bob Menendez (D, Hoboken).
For the 2008-2009 Legislative Session, the 8th district of the New Jersey Legislature is represented in the State Senate by Phil Haines (R, Springfield Township) and in the Assembly by Dawn Marie Addiego (D, Evesham Township) and Scott Rudder (R, Medford Township).[9] The Governor of New Jersey is Jon Corzine (D, Hoboken).[10]
Burlington County is governed by a five-member Board of Chosen Freeholders, elected at-large to three-year terms on a staggered basis. As of 2008, Burlington County's Freeholders are Freeholder Director James K. Wujcik (Cinnaminson Township, 2009), Deputy Director Joseph B. Donnelly (Cinnaminson Township, 2010), Dawn Marie Addiego (Evesham Township, 2008), Aubrey A. Fenton (Willingboro Township, 2008) and William S. Haines, Jr. (Medford Township, 2009).[11]

The Shamong Township School District serves public school students in kindergarten through eighth grade. Schools in the district (with 2005-06 enrollment data from the National Center for Education Statistics[12]) are Indian Mills Elementary School for grades K-4 (539 students) and Indian Mills Memorial School for grades 5-8 (436 students).
Public school students in Shamong Township in grades 9-12 attend Seneca High School located in Tabernacle Township, which is part of the Lenape Regional High School District. The district serves students from Evesham Township, Medford Lakes, Medford Township, Mount Laurel Township, Shamong Township, Southampton Township, Tabernacle Township and Woodland Township.[13] The school serves students in ninth through twelfth grade from Shamong, Southampton, Tabernacle and Woodland Townships.[14]
