Shamokal or Samakal (Bengali: সমকাল Shômokal, "current time, contemporary") is a Bengali language daily newspaper published in Dhaka, Bangladesh. Abed Khan, a widely reputed columnist serves as Editor. Shamokal started its journey from April, 2005. Golam Sarwar, the Editor of Jugantor, another news-daily of Bangladesh, was the first Editor of Shamokal. As of 2007 the circulation of Shamokal is around 2 Lakh. Muzzammil Husain Manju, the another prominent journalist of Bangladesh and former Deputy Editor of Prothom Alo, has been working here as Deputy Editor. Mustafiz Shafi is working here as News Eeditor. Recently another renouned journalist Alamgir Hossain joined here as Deputy Editor.

Famous colouminsts regularly authors in this newspaper. Abdul Gaffar Chowdhury authors here every week under `Kaler Ayna (The Mirror of the Time)'. Hassan Azizul Haq, the famous story writer of the sub continet, also authors here. Justice Habibur Rahman, the former chief advisor of Bangladesh caretaker government is another regular columnist of Samakal. Famous coloumnist Zillur Rahman Siddiqui, Shahriar Kabir, Badruddin Omar, Selim Reza Newton, Economist Anu Muhammad, Abu Ahmed, Dramatist Mamunur Rashid also authors their columns here.

`Kaler Kheya (Boat of the Time)', the most popular literary magazine of this time, is one of the weekly suppliments of Samakal. Prominent young poet Masud Hassan edited this suppliment. The other weekly suppliments are 'Nandan', `Shaili', 'Campus', 'Kurir Pore (after 20)', 'Taka Aana Pai (Economy)', 'Naristhan (Women Platform)', 'Champion' and 'Ghassfaring (page for children)'. 'Suhreed Samabesh (Platform of Welwishers)' is the reader organization of this daily. Jointly with Oxfam GB, Samakal recently published a magazine on Climate Change of Bangladesh.

From begaining at 2005 its brave journalists have been working avoiding all threats and dangours. In 2005 Goutam Das who worked here as Faridpur Bureau Chief, was murdered. In 2006 rulling party cadres attacked Samakal Rajshahi Bureau office and Shiblee Noman, the Bureau Chief was assaulted by them. But till now Samakal team is working bravely.
