Episodes often focused on Bob's middle adulthood or the fact that he was not trendy, but managed to make it by having the confidence to be himself. Some episodes were surrealistic in nature, such as Bob trying an experimental hair restoration product only to find it has resulted in him becoming a werewolf, or him taking up "Dance Fu", a combination of the martial arts and jazz dancing in order to protect his family's right to go into a restaurant freely after a thug has threated to attack him. Other episodes were more down to earth, such as Bob having a sit-in with his son in their treehouse in order to protest oppressive zoning laws which demand the son's treehouse be demolished. In another episode Bob hides in order to avoid embarassing his daughter at a party; he then livens up the party to the enjoyment of all involved. He even helps her approach a boy she liked.
The series finale had Bob circulating a petition unsuccessfully; then attempting to get President Bill Clinton to be one of the signatories when he finds out the President is visiting Bob's hometown.
