Shakhtyorsk

Shakhtersk (Russian: Шахтёрск; Japanese: 塔路, Tōro) is a town in Uglegorsky District of Sakhalin Oblast, Russia, located on the western coast of Sakhalin Island, 376 kilometers (234 mi) north-west of Yuzhno-Sakhalinsk. Population: 10,643 (2002 Census);[1] 12,945 (1989 Census).[2]

The town was founded after 1905 as Toro. It was a part of the Karafuto Prefecture of Japan. When the Soviet Union re-established control over the southern part of Sakhalin Island in August 1945, the town was subordinated to Sakhalin Oblast. It was given its present name in 1947.
