Shahid or Shaheed is a a Muslim theophoric name, from Ash-Shaheed (الشهيد), one of the 99 names of God in the Qur'an.
As a male given name it is common among Muslims, being also one of the names given to Muhammad. It is the Arabic word for witness or martyr.
It is a common name in India and Pakistan, where the two meanings in Arabic have diverged with different pronunciations. The more common version, pronounced Shahed, means "witness" in Urdu. The variant Shaheed, meaning "martyr", is less common.
