Shafer Peak is a prominent peak, 3,600 m, standing 3 miles (4.8 km) south of Mount Hewson in the Deep Freeze Range, Victoria Land. Mapped by United States Geological Survey (USGS) from surveys and U.S. Navy air photos, 1955-63. Named by Advisory Committee on Antarctic Names (US-ACAN) for Lieutenant Cdt. Willard G. Shafer, (CEC) U.S. Navy, officer in charge of the nuclear power plant at McMurdo Station, winter party 1965.
