[edit] Which version
What i liked about the new version of the shared upload notice was that it didn't place such an emphasis on who hosted the content (largely irrelevant), that it was free content and so on, it was just a short, to the point notice with two links, one bold which pointed you to the image description page on the commons.
I feel that the user interface here in general is a bit to prone to creeping featurism, the longer this message is the less efficient it can be at its original purpose, to direct whoever goes to an image page to its description page on the commons.
For reference here are the two versions of the message: —Ævar Arnfjörð Bjarmason 09:38, 2005 Mar 1 (UTC)
This is a file from the Wikimedia Commons. Please see its image description page there. |
This is a file from the Wikimedia Commons, a repository of free content hosted by the Wikimedia Foundation. Please see the image description page for licensing information and authorship. |
See Wikipedia:Village pump (policy)#Tag for images on commons. Basically someone was concerned that the message didn't indicate that Commons was all free content and didn't indicate where licensing and authorship information might be found. "Image description page" is, after all, a bit of Wikipedia jargon that the average reader might or might not figure out. If it's necessary to keep it short and sweet, while still incorporating these vital points, I'd suggest:
This file is free content from the Wikimedia Commons. Please see the description page there for licensing and authorship. |
This omits the fact that the Commons is a Wikimedia project, which isn't essential, but keeps the two important points: the content is free, and the important information is on the Commons page. —Charles P. (Mirv) 18:31, 1 Mar 2005 (UTC)
- I think the link Free content is not needed. Every additional link distracts from the really important one to the image description page. The details of free is described there anyway. -- Chris 73 Talk 13:31, Mar 2, 2005 (UTC)

- The current version is fine. --Meno25 02:00, 15 December 2006 (UTC)
[edit] Image description page -> file description page
Would it not be better (for instance, for
) to have the text reading file description page rather than image description page? I know the namespace is currently image:
, although I hope this might, in the future, change to media:
. Cheers, Smoddy (tgec) 18:17, 14 Mar 2005 (UTC)
[edit] Proposed updates
- I think "its" should not be part of the link to the image description page. If i wasn't here for #2 anyway, I would have just been bold and done it..
- The word "copied" should be changed to "shown". I remember, when I was newer, this made me think that someone manually copied the page, and that it may be out dated.
What do you all think of that? --Phroziac (talk) 23:07, 24 September 2005 (UTC)
- Sounds good to me... especially #2 as it makes more sense than the current message. Sasquatcht|c 23:22, 24 September 2005 (UTC)
- Sounds good to me as well. --Siva1979Talk to me 18:26, 31 July 2006 (UTC)

[edit] trying to raise proife of commons
{{editprotected}}
change the thing to this User:Geni/temp so that people relise there is a project they can contributr to.Geni 23:34, 19 March 2007 (UTC)
- I agree that something along those lines (maybe a slight rewording) would be useful. The current notice links to the Commons but doesn't actually say what it is; many Wikipedia readers don't even know there are other Wikimedia projects. Sure, there are the sister project links at the bottom of the Main Page and in other places, but people often don't notice them. Being as it is directly relevant to the Commons, this is a good place to have such a message – Qxz 23:37, 19 March 2007 (UTC)

Commons:Commons:Welcome would be a better page for a "You can help" link, really - David Gerard 16:03, 7 September 2007 (UTC)
- Tl:dr. Just too much text there. commons:Commons:Upload/en at least gets yu dirrectly into things.Geni 17:13, 7 September 2007 (UTC)
[edit] "Please do not categorize this file locally"
{{editprotected}}
"Please do not categorize this file locally"
The above addition to the template was not discussed before being added recently by Yonatan. Please see this diff: [1]
The edit summary was:
"files should be categorized on commons, not locally in 99.9% of cases (ie. every case except for en.wp featured images"
This is incorrect. This addition should be removed pending discussion. I have started a discussion here:
Please continue discussion there mostly, in order to avoid duplication and confusion in the talk threads.--Timeshifter 13:52, 2 September 2007 (UTC)
- Done. I undid the edit while discussion continues. Cheers. --MZMcBride 02:51, 3 September 2007 (UTC)

[edit] Link to Wikimedia Commons
I want to suggest that instead of linking to the home page, we link to Wikipedia:Wikimedia Commons. --Steinninn 01:57, 8 September 2007 (UTC)
