[edit] Controversial?

How is Showa Day a "controversial" holiday? --moof 23:25, 10 May 2007 (UTC)

  • The BBC article linked as a source on the article pages says that critics of renaming the holiday said it would "upset other nations, especially China and the two Koreas, who will say it glorifies Japan's often brutal militaristic past" and goes on to add that "a similar bill was abandoned in the past, due to political pressure." On the other hand, it seems to be becoming less controversial: "the opposition said it now accepted the idea that the holiday would encourage public reflection of the turbulent 63 years of Hirohito's reign, rather than glorify the emperor himself."--Martinship (talk) 10:11, 29 April 2008 (UTC)
