Shōwa Iōjima

From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

Shōwa Iōjima (昭和硫黄島?) is a volcanic deserted island, located just offshore to the north of Iōjima, Kagoshima. Despite its name, the island is not related to the famous Iwo Jima (硫黄島 Iōtō?) of Volcano Islands, Ogasawara, Tokyo. Shōwa Iōjima came into existence during an eruption in 1934. On September 6, 1934, earthquakes began. On the 20th, 2 km east a volcano formed, and by December it had formed a new island.
