Sgt. Baker is the 3rd track from Primus' second studio album Sailing the Seas of Cheese. By combining a harsh, jangling, military beat and shouted lyrics by Les Claypool, the song attempts to create the atmosphere of a nightmarish boot camp.
The intro consists of Les Claypool playing bass accompanied by a quiet accordion and sporadic accents from guitarist Larry LaLonde and drummer Tim Alexander. After this, the main bass riff of the song emerges. As is typical in Primus releases, the bass riff drives the song while the guitar mainly creates atmosphere. Claypool assumes the persona of Sgt. Baker, addressing the listener as a new recruit. The tone of the writing is very cynical towards the desocializing aspect of the military, and references R. Lee Ermey's character in Full Metal Jacket.
