SG team

From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

In the science-fiction universe of the Stargate SG-1 television series, the "SG" military-team designation denotes a team that is a part of the Stargate Program, while the number following the designation is to distinguish between separate Stargate teams. Certain teams have special duties within the Stargate Program.

The program is run from Stargate Command (also, "the SGC"), whose mission it is to guard and use the Stargate, an alien device discovered in Egypt on Earth, the function of which was later discovered as allowing instantaneous travel between similar devices scattered on planets throughout the cosmos. After the alien race known as the Goa'uld became a threat to Earth, the Stargate went into use to help protect Earth.

When Stargate Command was formed there were 9 SG teams created and at present there are at least 25, each expansion likely requested through Major Davis, as it was in "Into the Fire". The majority of the teams are U.S. Air Force with some U.S. Marine Corps, civilians and, recently, U.S. Army. Other countries' militaries have been included as the existence of the Stargate was revealed to other countries (the first were the Russians, agreed to in "Redemption (Part 2)", first seen in "Metamorphosis"). A very few alien beings (Teal'c, Jonas Quinn, and Vala Mal Doran) have also been allowed to join. Listed below are the special designation teams noted thus far in the series.

...However, the President of the United States happens to agree with you. In the event your theories pan out, he has ordered the formation of nine teams, whose duties will be to perform reconnaissance, determine threats, and if possible to make peaceful contact with the peoples of these worlds. Now, these teams will operate on a covert, top-secret basis. No one will know of their existence except the President and the Joint Chiefs. Colonel O'Neill, your team will be designated SG-1.

[edit] Other Team Designations

  • 1st SFW (Snakeskinners) — There is at least one wing of F-302 pilots based in the Milky Way, although they are not considered an actual SG team. "SFW" likely stands for either "Strategic Fighter Wing" or "Space Fighter Wing".[39]

[edit] Stargate Atlantis

The spin-off series Stargate Atlantis also features several off-world exploration teams, the majority of which are U.S. Marine Corps with some U.S. Air Force and multi-national civilian members. Additionally, multi-national soldiers from at least four countries (Russia, United Kingdom, Germany and Spain) are assigned to the Atlantis base security unit.

[edit] Season 1

The Atlantis military component is originally lead by Marine Corps Colonel Marshall Sumner. After Col. Sumner is killed in action during the first contact with the Wraith, Air Force Major John Sheppard, the second highest ranking military officer at this time, takes over the position as acting commander.[40] From the personnel who first arrive in Atlantis, at least three teams are established during Atlantis season one.

Team leader Notes
Maj. John Sheppard Flagship team. Lieutenant Aiden Ford, Dr. Rodney McKay and Teyla Emmagan are assigned.
Sgt. Stackhouse Conducted a reconnaissance mission with Sheppard's team.[41] Later charged with a mission of securing a suitable Alpha site.[42]
Sgt. Bates Primarily charged with Atlantis base security.

[edit] Season 2 – present

With the expansion of the Atlantis Expedition, its military complement increases as well. Sheppard is promoted to the rank of Lieutenant Colonel and instated as military component commander of the Atlantis Expedition.[43] Air Force Major Evan Lorne joins as military component executive officer after Lieutenant Ford is affected by a Wraith enzyme and escapes from the city, and former Satedan Army Specialist Ronon Dex joins the flagship team. A number of commissioned officers are established as team leaders as well.

Team leader Notes
Lt. Col. John Sheppard Flagship team. Dr. Rodney McKay, Teyla Emmagan, and Ronon Dex are assigned.
Maj. Evan Lorne Originally Walker, Stevens, and unnamed sergeant are assigned. Walker and Stevens are killed while they are defending Iratus bugs;[44] later two additional members are assigned.[45]
Lt. Edison Team dispatched with Sheppard to raid the Genii warehouse on M6R-867.[46]
Lt. Morrison Marine combat team dispatched to guard humanized Wraith and protect Dr. Beckett. All team members are killed by a group of humanized Wraith convinced by Michael.[47]
unnamed Major Team dispatched to a village with other teams in a search and rescue effort to find Ronon Dex.[48]
unnamed officer Marine combat team dispatched to search and rescue Sheppard from hands of Acastus Kolya. Six team members are assigned.[49]
Maj. Leonard Largent and an additional two members are assigned. The entire team is killed by Major Leonard due to a Wraith hallucination device. Leonard later kills himself because he thinks Sheppard is a Kull Warrior.[50]
Lt. Kagan Marine combat team. Sgt. Barroso and another unnamed Sergeant are assigned. The unnamed Sergeant is killed when he activates the DHD, which is booby trapped by Maj. Leonard. Barroso and Kagan are later gunned down by Leonard. Barroso later dies and Kagan barely survives.[50]
Lt. Negley Marine combat team dispatched to provide cover for Sheppard's team. All team members are killed by Michael's enhanced Iratus bugs.[51]
Maj. Dorsey Team dispatched on a reconnaissance mission against the Replicators on M6R-214.[52]
Capt. Robbins Team dispatched to support a medical supply operation on M2R-441.[53]
Maj. Jordan Team which made contact with the Replicator-created Elizabeth Weir on M34-227.[54]
Lt. Kemp Team dispatched to guide evacuation of the Sions at M9R-373. Team lost contact with Atlantis after the gate was taken out by Replicators' ship. Only one team member returned to Atlantis and others including Lt. Kemp are presumed MIA.[55]
Hester Team dispatched with Sheppard and other teams to capture the Midway Space Station back from the Wraith. All team members were killed in action.[56]

There are also several specialist teams that have been put together for single missions, such as the anthropologist team in "Suspicion" and the marine teams for search and rescue operations in "Runner."

No official team designations have been mentioned thus far in the series. However, during the first season, director and creative consultant Peter DeLuise has called the teams 'Atlantis Reconnaissance Team 1', 'Team 2' and 'Team 3' (or AR-1, AR-2 and AR-3), and writer and executive producer Joseph Mallozzi has called the teams 'First Atlantis Reconnaissance Team', 'Second Atlantis Reconnaissance Team', etc.[57][58]

[edit] Other teams

  • Marine Corps Colonel Dillon Everett's Marine combat unit — A company-size unit which is sent from Earth through the Stargate to help Atlantis against the incoming Wraith attack. Some members are killed in action during the battle. This is not an actual Atlantis team, and most of the contingent is shipped back to Earth by Daedalus. It appears that some members have been permanently assigned to Atlantis, such as Lt. Laura Cadman.
  • 1st TFW (Wraithwaxers) — The wing which operates the Daedalus and her F-302 fighters, though again it is not considered an actual SG team.[42] While it is not made clear what TFW actually means, it likely stands for "Tactical Fighter Wing", a term formerly used by the U.S. Air Force.
  • 2nd TW — The wing which operates the Apollo and her F-302 fighters, though again it is not considered an actual SG team. "TW" stands for "Tactical Wing."[59]
