Sexpo

From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

Sexpo is an Australian exhibition focusing on displaying all aspects of health, sexuality and adult lifestyle for all Australians.[1] It is only open to patrons over the age of 18, and is run by Club X. Sexpo is run in most major capital cities, including Perth, Sydney, Adelaide, Melbourne and Brisbane.

Prior to the 2008 Brisbane event complaints had been made about a Sexpo billboard being too close to a school. An Ipswich City councillor called on Queensland Rail to remove a billboard advertising "live porn stars" because it was situated just 600 metres from a primary school.

The Sexpo billboard, on QR land along the Ipswich rail line at Goodna, featured headshots of a number of international adult entertainers.[2]

[edit] Sexpo goes international

The Sexpo event has been successfully exported to South Africa. Silas Howarth (SEXPO South Africa) approached SEXPO Australia’s David Ross for information about holding the event in South Africa. A license agreement was signed and the South African event staged within the year.[3] The 2008 event held in Durban where thousands of visitors were attracted to the health, sexuality and lifestyle expo, "Sexpo". An organiser said that most people coming to the exhibition said they were shopping for a naughty Valentine this year.[4] Hundreds of millions in cash investment is being predicted by Durban city fathers, who cautiously embraced the hosting of the controversial Sexpo at the ICC.[5] Sexpo organiser Silas Howarth said the exhibition was about celebrating our sexuality in our natural state. “Sexpo celebrates responsible sexual behaviour, and several of our exhibitors, like sexual health organisers, the South African Sexual Health Association, Aids organisations and others, as well as education workshops, propagate this,” he said.[6]

[edit] Rival event

The appearance of rival show "Live 08" at the Royal Melbourne Showgrounds in February 2008 spurred Sexpo into "discouraging" stall holders from double dating. It sent an email to its own stall holders making them aware that Live 08 was sponsored by rival adult retailer Sexyland. "Australia has a relatively small population and any new exhibition must be able to attract a completely new audience if it is not to adversely affect the disposable income of those attending the shows," the email from Sexpo supremo David Ross claimed.[7]
