Severna Park High School is a public high school located in Severna Park, Maryland. It is a part of the Anne Arundel County Public Schools system. Its current feeder school is Severna Park Middle School. The Falcons are sport rivals with nearby Broadneck High School. SPHS opened its doors to students in 1963.

The current principal is Mr. Jason Dykstra. The former principal, Dr. Hamilton, was with the school briefly and announced his resignation in the late 2006-2007 school year.

Severna Park High has gained a strong reputation in Anne Arundel County for its consistent success in academics and athletics. Severna Park consistently scores highly in the Maryland School Assessment (MSA). Severna Park students consistently score highly in the High School Assessment (HSA). The school's field hockey team, state champions in 2006 and 2007, has been one of the nation's top teams for decades, and holds the record for most championship titles in the entire state of Maryland.[citation needed]. Both the boys and girls lacrosse teams were state champions in 2007. The school's renowned mock trial team won the state championship in 2008 and 2006, and was undefeated in the county for several years.

The school has also gained a strong reputation for theater and music. Rock N Roll Revival is an annual stage show produced in March. The production consists of students (and some staff) performing classic rock songs. The show has a band, singers, dancers, and a tech crew that is almost entirely composed of SPHS students. In 2007, the production's 18th year, six of seven shows were sold out.

[edit] Severna Park High School in the news

  • In 2003, Severna Park High School received the Maryland Center for Character Education School of the Year Award for all of their outstanding efforts in helping students to develop their full potential as adults and citizens.
  • In May 2007, an investigation took place to see whether several students cheated on Advance Placement testing. It was found that the problem partially lied with the administrator who administered the test, as he never explained to the students what they could or couldn't do during testing and break periods. Students involved were allowed to retake the test. The investigation caused a stir not only in Severna Park, but around the county.
  • In March 2007, then-Boys Lacrosse coach Jim Beardmore [3] took his team to the Sandy Point State Park for the annual Polar Bear Plunge without the principal's approval in January 2007. He resigned from the job and accepted another job with the Denver Outlaws while the team was still able to win another state title in lacrosse after his departure.
