Severe Torture is a brutal death metal band from the Netherlands. They formed back in 1997 as Thijs (on guitars), Seth (on drums), Erik (on vocals), Jelle (on guitars) and Patrick (on bass). With this lineup, they recorded a 5 song demo tape called "Baptized in Virginal Liquid", produced by Vincent Dijkers (Sinister, Houwitser), in 1998. This demo tape eventually sold 600 copies all over the world. After releasing the demo, Erik left the group to join the Dutch death metal band Sinister. At the same time, Seth and Patrick joined the Dutch band Centurian, but still continued to play in Severe Torture. Erik was replaced by Dennis Schreurs, and with this lineup the band recorded a 2 song demo sent out to record labels. After receiving positive reactions, the band went on to play a gig with Immolation, and Jelle left the group soon afterwards.
The band continued on as a 4-piece group and signed a contract for 1 CD with Fadeless Records. They later appeared at the No Mercy 2000 festival in Tilburg with Cannibal Corpse, Deicide, Vader, Hate Eternal, and Vomitory. Soon after, they embarked on their first tour, 9 days across the Czech Republic, Slovakia, Germany, Belgium and Holland with Damnation, and the last 3 gigs with Pyaemia.
After this tour, they began recording their full-length debut, "Feasting On Blood", at Franky's Recording Kitchen with producers Berthus Westerhuys and Robbie Woning. The artwork for the album was done by Joe Maloney. "Feasting on Blood" was released on October 9th 2000 in Europe and was released in the USA through Hammerheart America in February 2001. The CD was also released on picture vinyl limited to 500 copies and was sold out 3 months after the release.
Severe Torture embarked on a European tour in January 2001 together with Macabre, Broken Hope and Die Apokalyptischen Reiter called "Masters of Murder 2001". During this tour, The Plague Records released the 7 inch "Lambs of a God"; 2 unreleased tracks ('Taking Down the Descender' and 'Lambs of a God') on green vinyl limited to 500 copies.
February 2001 The Plague Records changed into Hammerheart Records and offered Severe Torture a contract for 1 more full-length and an option for 2 more.
April 2001 was the month Severe Torture played live in the United States. Severe Torture played the Ohio Death Fest together with Exhumed, Deeds Of Flesh, and many other bands, and played two gigs with Pessimist and Burial, in the process exposing their music to America.
After this US trip Severe Torture started writing for the next album. Again the album was recorded at Frankys Recording Kitchen with Berthus Westerhuys and Robbie Woning. The recordings were finished in March 2002 and right after Severe Torture went to the USA for a second time. They did a tour called 'Bloodletting North America Part III' together with Deeds Of Flesh, Disgorge and Disavowed. Also an appearance at the New England Metal & Hardcore fest and at the Ohio Deathfest plus 5 shows in Canada were part of the tour.
Next up was a 5-week European tour with Cannibal Corpse, Dew-Scented and Viu Drakh in September/October 2002. During this tour Severe Torture met Marvin who played session guitar in Dew-Scented and also guitar in Blo.Torch. A few months after the tour he was asked to join Severe Torture as second guitar player and since spring 2003 Severe Torture are a 5-piece.
After many canceled tours, the band decided that it was time to move on to a new label and as a farewell Karmageddon Media released a live album recorded by Tue Madsen (The Haunted) which included bonus material. A new deal was signed with Earache Records and the new album "Fall of the Despised" was released Autumn 2005.
May 2006 was the 3rd time Severe Torture brought their music to the U.S. with an appearance at the Maryland Deathfest. Summer past by with appearances at Kaltenbach Open Air (AT), Brutal Assault (CZ) & Party San Open Air (DE) and still overwelmed by those festivals Severe Torture started preparing to hit the road with Vader & God Dethroned for a 6-week trek throughout Europe Sept/Okt/Nov 2006.
