[edit] History

Seton Home Study School was originally affiliated with Seton High School in Manassas, Virginia. As Seton High School began growing and receiving students from around the country, the school's founder, Dr. Anne Carroll, received requests to allow the courses to be taken by correspondence. Realizing this was the best way to serve those families who would be burdened by boarding their children, Carroll founded Seton Home Study School in 1980. In 1985, Dr. Mary Kay Clark took over as director and the headquarters moved to Front Royal, Virginia. Seton continued to grow and now has an enrollment of about 10,000 students. Seton also entered into the book publishing business and is now the largest publisher in the United States of Catholic textbooks and workbooks for children. Some families just use these Seton textbooks, rather than fully enrolling in the school.[1]

[edit] Curriculum

Unlike some other homeschooling programs, Seton is fully accredited by the Southern Association of Colleges and Schools, meaning that those enrolled students who graduate from Seton's high school program receive a diploma.[2] At all grade levels the curriculum is thoroughly Catholic in accordance with Seton's educational philosophy. If a student is enrolled with Seton, quarterly tests and assignments must be sent in for grading, although parent graded items may comprise part of the student's grade as well.

[edit] Highschool curriculum

Seton requires twenty-two credits to graduate from high school, with each credit representing a year taken in a given subject. The required courses are as follows:

Foreign Language: 2 credits (both must be of the same language)

Social Studies: 3 credits

In addition an minimum of 3 elective credits must be taken.[3] These electives can be from available courses in the subject areas of business education, computers, English, science and health, social sciences, and mathematics.[4]
