[edit] New Salem, Menard County, Illinois

This one isn't a ghost town. It's a park built in the 1930's. There was a town on this site in the 19th century, but there's nothing left of that above ground - and that doesn't fit the definition of "ghost town". Rklawton 21:28, 6 August 2007 (UTC)

Yes, it's a park now, but New Salem was an actual village in the 1800's before it was ever a park. It may not fit what most people think what a ghost town is but it is still a ghost town because a community once dwelled there. Please re-read Wikipedia's definition of a ghost town. It specifically states "A ghost town may be a site where little or nothing remains above the soil surface."
Standard classifications for ghost towns are:
Class A...barren site
Class B...rubble and/or roofless building ruins
Class C...standing abandoned buildings (with roofs), no population, except maybe a caretaker
Class D...semi/near ghost towns, a small resident population, many abandoned buildings
Class E...busy historic community, yet much smaller than in its boom years
Class F...a restored town, state park, or some other “additional” status. SeriousKarma 22:03, 6 August 2007 (UTC)

Do you have a source for this standard classification of ghost towns? It's not in the ghost teown article. Note also that the Ghost town article isn't sourced. I've started a discussion about this on the project's talk page. The project itself is pretty new, and it isn't very well developed. As a result, I propose continuing this discussion there. In the mean time, I won't be reverting your ghost-town related edits. It wouldn't be appropriate for me to do that with an open discussion at hand. Cheers, Rklawton 23:51, 6 August 2007 (UTC)

I am not here to debate about this. Maybe that is what you're looking for but everyone's definition of a ghost town is different, that is why I left the New Salem article at that. But if you would like to get technical.... the American Heritage Dictionary defines a ghost town as "A once thriving town, especially a boomtown of the American West, that has been completely abandoned." And according to ghosttowns.com... JUST WHAT IS A GHOST TOWN? Some people think of a ghost town as being a "movie set" panorama with a full complement of vacant buildings complete with doors swinging in the wind and the howling of the breeze through holes in walls. Others think of a ghost town as being a town that is a shadow of its former past, but still alive with museums and shops and things to do pertaining to the old west in a true old west location. Still others think of a ghost town as being nothing but a few ruins and foundations in a far remote area accessible only by Four-Wheel drive on a good day. So, who is right? Everyone is right. A ghost town is any place where people once lived, or are still living, that is a shadow of its past glory. This includes everything from absolutely remote locations with very little remaining (sometimes called the "True Ghost"), to flourishing tourist towns such as Jerome, Az or even Calico, Ca. The "standard classifications" I listed was from their forums, which most people agreed on. Also did you notice that one the catagories for New Salem is "defunct towns in Illinois?" Why would you not correct that if you consider it a park? SeriousKarma 00:18, 7 August 2007 (UTC)
Those are all good questions for the project page - if you're interested. Rklawton 00:40, 7 August 2007 (UTC)

[edit] British Columbia Highway Shields

Please do not add BC highway shields to Any article except the article they represent. They are copyrighted and under WP:FUC they cannot be placed on other articles besides the ones they represent. Thank you,  — master sonT - C 04:12, 2 January 2008 (UTC)

The same is true for Manitoba shields - or any shield that is copyrighted - please verify copyright status before using the shields outside of their home articles. — master sonT - C 04:16, 2 January 2008 (UTC)
Sorry, I had observed a few other "list of" type articles that had those particular shields in their articles, and simply thought I should add them to the highway articles. I will remove them asap. There are still quite a few Manitoba shields that I did not add to these articles, I will check copyright status and remove if necessary. Sorry for the inconvience. -SeriousKarma (talk) 04:27, 2 January 2008 (UTC)

[edit] New Hampton

Original here

Not sure what to call New Hampton, if you don't think it's qualified to be a neighborhood. On the other hand, I don't see why it can't be called one: Google Maps shows houses and other buildings right nearby. It's not a ghost town, at any rate. Nyttend (talk) 02:53, 6 January 2008 (UTC)

All I know is what I get from the article, which gives those as the coördinates for the community. I'm well aware that they're part of W.J.; what I read makes it seem that the community was located within the southern boundary of W.J. If you have a source for it being farther south, thus being outside of town, could you please post it? Nyttend (talk) 03:36, 6 January 2008 (UTC)
