[edit] Inexpert Speculation

I was looking at the excellent photos of the Narmer Palette in the Oxford History of Ancient Egypt (ISBN 0-19-815034-2, pgs 48 and 79-80) and wondered: The Palette dates from ca 3000 BC. So does Arabian domestication of camels.

Given the Semitic appearance (big noses, curled (?) hair) of the vanquished foes on the palette, it looks to me like serpopards are based on nth-hand reports of camels ... notoriously foul-tempered creatures, with a smell that repels horses (and perhaps other animals).

[edit] FFXI

Since so little information exists, perhaps the fact that a serpopard, a creature of roughly this description, appears in Final Fantasy XI under the name Serpopard Ishtar should be mentioned. That's all I know about it and haven't played the game, so I'll leave the choice and writing to someone who knows.
