I'd be curious to know what was in the mind of the author who wrote, "The ethnic conflict between the Serbians and Albanians is one that stems back to medieval times."

"Medieval" is an imprecise term, but one rarely sees it used for anything later than the 16th century. Given that the Albanian people did not become predominantly Muslim until the 17th century, it's hard to see how the conflict can both "stem back to medieval times" and have "initially beg[u]n as a religious dispute between Muslims [and] Christians". There were a lot of conflicts in this area in medieval times, but none of them are readily connected to the conflict between Serbs and Albanians from the 19th century on.
