The genus Serrasalmus consists of several species of piranha in the subfamily Serrasalminae of the family Characidae.

These fish, among other characteristics, are predatory, have sharp teeth and generally have a rhomboid shape.

Some of the species in the genus can exceed 20 inches, making it one of the largest Pirambeba genera.
