Sergio Vela Martínez

Sergio Vela Martínez (born 1964 in Mexico City) is a Mexican lawyer, politician, opera director, television host and musician. He is currently the President of the National Council for Culture and the Arts (CONACULTA) of Mexico.

He was director of the Bellas Artes Opera; from 1992 to 2000, he was Director General of the Festival Internacional Cervantino, Coordinator of the 2000 Cultural Program: From the 20th Century to the Third Millennium and is Artistic Advisor to the Palacio de Minería Academy of Music. From 2001 to 2006, he was Director General of Music of the National Autonomous University of Mexico and since December 2006, has been President of the National Council for Culture and the Arts.

He has given several courses and conferences on opera and music at various academic institutions, such as the National Autonomous University, the Universidad Panamericana and Casa Lamm.

  • He received the Mozart Medal from the Austrian Embassy in 2006 for his work as an artistic promoter.
  • In 1998, he was awarded the Order of Arts and Literature from France.
  • In 1999, the Federal Cross for Merit from Germany.
  • In 2000, the Order of Merit from Italy.
