From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
Sergio Palleroni is an architect and professor at the University of Texas. He is internationally known for his social and environmental activism, providing with his students and collaborators sustainable design solutions to communities in need. In 1995 Professor Palleroni founded the BASIC Initiative at the University of Washington College of Architecture and Urban Planning with Professors David Riley and Steven Badanes. The BASIC Initiative (www.basicinitiative.org) is a service learning program which every year challenges students at various partner universities in the US, Latin America and Europe, to engage the problems of communities traditionally underserved by the design fields. Based on the pedagogical ideas of service learning and reflective practice, students have to date taken on the design of construction of more than 50 distinct project in regions ranging from Southern India, Central Africa Mexico and SE Asia, to Native American communities in the US an Latin America. The work of Professor Palleroni has in recent years received increasing international recognition from US institutions (among them the AIA/ACSA National Education and NCARB National Education Awards), awards from various countries (Mexico, Nicaragua, Colombia, India, and Taiwan) and more recently (2005) the US National Design Award from the Smithsonian and White House Millennium Project as well as induction into the Design Hall of Fame (2006). Much of this work is documented in Studio at Large: Architecture in Service of Global Communities (2004), and in the PBS series on global sustainability "Design e2" (2006) , which devoted one episode, "Green for All", to his work with the world's poor.
