Sergio Armando Mitre (born February 16, 1981 in Los Angeles, California) is a Major League Baseball pitcher for the Florida Marlins. Throws and bats right handed. Mitre graduated from Montgomery High School in San Diego, California, June 1999. He was the Chicago Cubs 7th-round selection in the 2001 draft out of San Diego City College. He made his major league debut for the Cubs in 2003 after being called up from the West Tenn Diamond Jaxx (Cubs AA team). He played in 3 games in 2003 (2 starts) and had an 0-1 win/loss record with an 8.31 Earned Run Average. In 2004, He started out the season on the Opening Day roster, filling in for the injured Mark Prior. He was sent down to the Iowa Cubs after Prior came back from injury. He then returned after the September roster expansions and pitched 4 games out of the bullpen. His season ending total was a 2-4 win/loss record with a 6.62 Earned Run Average in 12 games (9 starts). In 2005 he started off on AAA Iowa's roster, and on May 10, 2005, he was recalled from AAA Iowa, only to be sent down after two games and not pitching in either. On May 24, 2005, he was called up for a spot start. As of June 15, 2005, he had compiled a 2-1 record plus two no-decisions. On June 15, 2005, Mitre pitched his first complete game, along with his first shutout in a 14-0 victory over the Florida Marlins.

On December 7, 2005, the Florida Marlins posted news on their website[1] that they had agreed to trade Juan Pierre to the Cubs, receiving Mitre and minor league pitchers Ricky Nolasco and Renyel Pinto in exchange.

Mitre will be out until at least June 1 with a forearm strain.

Mitre met with Dr. James Andrews after experiencing pain in his arm while attempting to come back from a strain suffered on Feb. 28. He won't be able to throw for the next 4-6 weeks.
