Since the turnout in the second round of the first presidential election of that year had been less than 50 per cent of all eligible voters, the election was invalid and was therefore repeated in December 2002 with the following result:
1. Vojislav Koštunica Democratic Party of Serbia 1,699,098 57.66%
2. Dr Vojislav Šešelj Serbian Radical Party 1,063,296 36.08%
3. Borislav Pelević Party of Serbian Unity 103,926 3.53%
Because of the failure of the previous presidential election, legally required turnout of 50% registered voters was dropped for the second round, and kept only for the first. However, this time the turnout failed to reach legally required 50% of registered voters even in the first round, and this ballot was declared invalid as well. By the time the next presidential election was held, the 50% turnout requirement for presidential election was scrapped altogether.
