The Sequoia Park Zoo is located in Eureka, California, USA and is operated by the City of Eureka. It is a small admission-free zoo whose mission is "to inspire wonder, understanding and respect for the natural world by providing fun, rewarding, educational experiences that encourage meaningful connections between animals, humans, and our environment".[1]
The zoo offers educational programs for school-age children and a barnyard, where children can interact with goats, sheep, chickens, rabbits, llamas, alpacas, and a dog. There is an educational building located in the front of the zoo called "Secrets of the Forest", which educates children about the animals and organisms in the redwood forest. Residents of the main zoo include: a Black Bear, Patagonian Cavies, Golden Lion Tamarins, Spider Monkeys, Bill the Chimpanzee, and Flamingos. The Sequoia Park Zoo Foundation is a non-profit organization that supports the zoo's mission through fundraising and public outreach programs. The Foundation operates a gift shop and cafe.
On June 26th, 2007 fifty year zoo resident and a favorite of locals of all ages, Bill the Chimpanzee, passed away. At 62 years of age,[2] Bill was one the oldest living Champanzees in the history of their captivity.[3]
The Sequoia Park Zoo is situated against the backdrop of the redwood forests of Sequoia Park.
