• 1863 – The North Shore Railroad, a predecessor of the Long Island Rail Road, is incorporated in New York to build a railroad between Hempstead Harbor and an interchange with the New York and Flushing Railroad.^[1]
• 1866 – George W. Richardson of the Troy and Boston Railroad is awarded a U.S. patent for a steam locomotive pop safety valve.^[2]
• 1868 – The Big Four group of financiers in California purchases the Southern Pacific Railroad.
• 1893 – The Ottawa, Arnprior and Parry Sound Railway receives official authorization to operate over a level junction with the Canadian Pacific Railway in Arnprior, Ontario.^[3]
• 1900 – The Arkansas, Louisiana and Southern Railway, a predecessor of the Kansas City Southern Railway, opens its extension from Sibley south to Ashland, Louisiana.^[4]

• 1905 – United Railways is added to the James J. Hill empire of railroads.^[2]
• 1955 – Passenger service aboard Canadian National Railway's carferries across the Detroit River is discontinued and replaced with bus service through the tunnels.^[5]

• 2003 - Canadian National Railway sells most of its Turcot Yard in Montreal to the Quebec Department of Transport for $17.8 million.^[6]
